Daily Health Tips: Is Sexual Intimacy During Pregnancy A Pre-Requisite For Safe Delivery?

Q: Dr is it compulsory to have sex during pregnancy in order to have a safe delivery? Does every woman or lady have dry vagina during pregnancy which leads to painful sex? What is the cause?

A: Thanks for the question and since I’ve received a couple of this same type of question ever since we discussed sexual intercourse during pregnancy, it’s important to re-iterate the finer points of that discussion.

Sexual intercourse is generally considered safe during pregnancy unless there are reasons why your obstetrician has suggested against it. This, however, does not mean that sexual intercourse is a necessary condition for a baby to be delivered safely. No! One could very well be pregnant for nine months and deliver safely without having had even one episode of sexual intercourse during pregnancy. Think about all the split families you know (husband in one country and wife in another!)

During pregnancy, the hormone estrogen is in abundant supply and should ordinarily make vaginal dryness a rarity. However, this is not always the case. A woman may not have the urge for sexual intercourse and indeed, has vaginal dryness such that if intercourse were to go ahead, it would be a painful ordeal for her as described above.

What are the causes of vaginal dryness in pregnancy (a period where ordinarily, the abundance of the hormone, estrogen should make vaginal lubrication a matter to be taken for granted)? They include:

• Lack of adequate foreplay
• Stress
• Emotional disconnect
• Douching
• Diabetes
• Childbirth and breastfeeding

Being overly tired is a reason why you may not be interested in sexual intercourse too and thus, vaginal dryness is a natural consequence of that.

Remember that communication is key, especially during this time to ensure that you and your husband understand what’s going on in each other’s minds. Getting a massage from hubby may be a good way to de-stress you and get you to emotionally re-connect with hubby.

You could also try out other means of exploring sexual intimacy together. Whatever you do, be sure to keep the communication lines open.

Daiky Health Tips: ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas!

‘Twas the night before Christmas! Have you read or heard that story? It’s a Christmas classic. On Christmas eve, in my home, we have a tradition…we all dress up and have dinner and then sit around the tree to read this story and have the children perform for us. Do you have any Christmas traditions? They make Christmas that much more special! But I digress…

Are you thinking of what to serve up on the day? Or for the different guests coming over? Are you worried that, though you want to cook and eat healthy, you just may not keep up with it?

Let me share one of my favourite recipes for cooking delicious chicken. I actually learnt to do the very first time while in med. school…don’t worry 😀 It’s a lot more than student grub!

Cut up your chicken into sizes you’re comfortable with. It would really be a great idea to remove the skin of the chicken 😀 Add onions and your spices to the chicken pieces (garlic, ginger, a little salt, pepper if you like spicy etc). If you can, cover with cling film and let it marinade overnight (let the spices really penetrate into the chicken).

Then add the chicken pieces to a pot and place over very low heat and allow the chicken to cook. Keep stirring such that the chicken cooks and even ‘sorta’ fries itself 😀 This is my brand of broiling 😀 You can also do this in the oven. Serve some pieces up with salad as a meal, or with jollof rice or alone as finger food for your guests. It tastes really, really delicious!

By the way, it wasn’t an error that there were no added oil or water. They are not needed.

Try it out and let me know what you think!

I hope y’all had a great day 😀

Daily Health Tips: What Can I Use For Ringworm?

Q: Hello, please ma’am I need your help, what can I use for ringworm?

A: Infection with ringworm can be very embarrassing…especially if it’s in a visible area of the body. I’m sure we all know that ring worm is not really a worm but a fungal infection and really prevention is focused on personal hygiene. Take a bath, clean up well and keep your personal things, personal. No sharing of towels and underwear.

Treatment is with an antifungal cream (you can ask for one in your pharmacy shop) but more severe infections would require an oral agent too (that is a tablet taken by mouth).

Daily Health Tips: Menstruating While Pregnant Re-Visited

Q: Hello Doctor, I am a mother of a year and six months old baby girl. Is it possible to see my menstrual flow and yet be pregnant? I saw my flow on the 8th of this month although it didn’t flow normally, I feel weak in the mornings and most times, feel like spitting.

A: Technically, you cannot menstruate while pregnant. However, you may bleed at about the same time that you would have your period. This is an implantation bleed as the fertilized egg gets comfortable in the uterus 😀 There are other causes. Please click on the link below for more on this topic.

Daily Health Tips: Can I Menstruate When I’m Pregnant?

So, I suggest you go to the hospital to check out these symptoms.
It’s almost Christmas!!! Why not surprise someone who is really not expecting it this Christmas? That colleague at work who appears to be a pain in delicate places…or the neighbor who you feel has a huge chip on his shoulder…or that friend who’s no longer a friend…The list is endless. Pick at least one person and show them serious, unexpected love 😀 It is, afterall, the season of love….For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son!

Have a good evening, people 😀

Daily Health Tips: Sleep Issues And High Cholesterol Level!

Q: Good morning, Dr. Ketch. Please my mum is 56yrs old and is having BP issues. She’s been on Lexotan for 2 weeks now, because she’s having difficulty sleeping. Is there any other remedy to help her sleep well at night apart from drugs because she’s scared she might be addicted? Also tests were conducted on her last week and the result shows she has high cholesterol level which she needs to cut down on. Please, what are the things she needs to avoid and what can help cut down cholesterol fast? Please, this is very urgent as she’s getting more worried. Please help!!!

A: Not getting enough sleep is a challenge at any time and your mum is right, becoming dependent on a sleeping pill is not the way to go.

Sleep problems may show up as difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep if one wakes up in the night, waking up too early and being unable to fall back asleep or waking up feeling very tired etc. This is called insomnia. These problems may (secondary insomnia) or may not (primary insomnia) be related to other health/disease conditions. Women over 60 years of age are more prone, people who are stressed and travel long distances across time zones are also more likely to have insomnia.

Causes of insomnia include stress of life (divorce, death of a loved one etc), medications, depression, anxiety, pain or discomfort etc
Insomnia without underlying medical conditions can be treated with lifestyle modifications like the under-mentioned ones:

Have a regular sleep routine that allows you (an adult) about 7 to 9 hours of sleep daily. Go for the higher limit, by the way 😀 Cultivate good sleep habits (no TVs in room, no work before bed time, a warm bath before bed etc). Lay off the caffeine and alcohol before bed time too. Regular exercise helps relieve everyday tension but vigorous exercise before bedtime may lead to inability to sleep too. Make your room a haven for sleep and clear out all clutter and be sure that you have invested in a good mattress and pillows. It’s a good idea to ventilate the day’s issues before you actually start getting ready for bed, so you can mentally file every issue away in a ‘to-do’ or ‘done’ box ahead of the next day.

Insomnia due to underlying medical condition needs the medical condition to be addressed.

High cholesterol level can be addressed with lifestyle modifications:
Exercise can help increase your level of good cholesterol. Aim for 150 minutes of activity weekly. Be sure to check with your doctor before starting on an exercise regimen, especially if you have been sedentary for a while.
Smoking reduces the level of good cholesterol. So, if you smoke, stop and if you don’t smoke, don’t start
Eat more fiber. Soluble fiber in wheat and oats can help reduce cholesterol levels.
Fatty fish (sardines, salmon, mackerel), walnuts, soya beans etc contain Omega-3 fatty acids which help reduce cholesterol levels.
Use healthier oils to cook. Oils high in mono-unsaturated fatty acids provide health benefits for the body

Her doctor will determine if this is sufficient or she needs medication.

I hope y’all had a great day! 😀

Big hugs 🙂
