Daily Health Tips: Difficulty With Passing Stool

Q: Good day. I am finding it difficult to pass stool and my stool is hard. Please what can I do?

A: Passing hard stools and having less than 3 bowel movements (in other words, stooling less than 3 times per week) is considered constipation. It can be due to lifestyle factors like not having enough fibre in diet, not drinking enough water per day and indeed not getting enough exercise to help move things along.

How can you help this?

Include some fibre in your diet. Fruits and vegetables, oatmeal, local rice and other whole grain meals are helpful.

Drinking at least 8 glasses of water daily. Remember that this number, 8, is not cast in stone. It’s just a helpful guide. If you’re in a hot area, you’ll probably drink more 😀

Get at least 30 minutes of exercise/activity per day or on at least 5 days of the week.

If these do not help, you may want to see your doctor for a proper examination as some diseases like Diabetes Mellitus may also cause constipation.

Daily Health Tips: Can A Pregnant Woman Reduce Her Baby’s Size By Drinking Tea?

Hi doc good evening. I’ll be 6 months pregnant this week. I want to be taking Lipton tea without milk daily or morning and night to avoid having a big baby. My 1st baby was 4.2kg and I had a C-section because she was big. Wish to have a normal delivery but don’t want the baby to be big. Is there any side effect to this??? Or am I harming my baby?? Please reply.

A: Big baby in pregnancy is called fetal macrosomia and happens when a baby gets too many nutrients probably due to mother being overweight, a previous history of big baby, Diabetes Mellitus in mother, eating too much during pregnancy, mother’s age more than 35 years etc However, starvation diet is not the answer as this might raise other problems like growth retardation in the baby.

The focus should be on a balanced diet with a graded weight increase of 12kg on average. In the first trimester, the calorie requirement doesn’t really increase. In the second trimester, extra calorie need is about 300 calories per day (three regular sized apples will give roughly this number of calories) and in the 3rd trimester, the extra calorie need is about 400 per day (four regular sized apples will give roughly this number of calories). This is the rule of thumb. Your doctors will advice on specific weight gain/maintenance goals based on your needs.

Remember that exercise is also a regular part of your pregnancy routine. Be guided by your doctor on this.

Daily Health Tips: Am I Drinking Too Much Water?

Q: Dr Ketch, sorry I want to know if it is it normal to be taking too much water and I want to know if it has a side effect. If I wake up, before brushing, I normally take four sachets of water. I want to know if I should continue or reduce the quantity I take every day.

A: Wow! Four satchets, before you even brush?! That’s interesting! Are you drinking because you’re thirsty or because you think it’s just right to drink that much?

I believe that a satchet of water is about 250mls…am I right? So, you’re really taking about 1l at a time. While this does not qualify as water intoxication where massive amounts of water are taken in a short time, giving the kidney way too much work to do with resultant headache, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, brain swelling later etc, it’s certainly not a great idea to drink too much at any given time. Space it out all through the day. Be guided by your thirst. Drink until you no longer feel thirsty and stop. Also check your urine, if it’s light yellow, then you’re good. If it’s a darker hue, you’re probably dehydrated.

Remember that while the rule of thumb is for you to drink 8 glasses of water per day, there’s no evidence to really back it up…but it’s just easy to remember. Your fluid requirement depends on age, location, activity level etc. So, if you’ve been exercising vigorously, you need, at least as much water as you lost in sweat. So, still using our ‘unscientific’ 8 glasses :D, spacing out your intake may mean taking 2 glasses of water with each meal and one glass with each snack (mid-morning and mid-afternoon).

Excerpts From The Book, Just For The Health Of It: Parenting (Diapering 101)

Did you always think diapering was easy…until you tried to diaper your own baby? How do I do it right? How do I prevent that spray of urine, specially with baby boys when diapering? What do I pack when going out with baby? How many diapers are enough…and how many make me look crazy? 😀 If my baby starts leaking poop or urine from the sides of the diaper, what does that mean? Wrong diaper or wrong size?

Daily Health Tips: Longer Menstrual Periods After Having A Baby

Q: Good morning Doc! I hope that you are OK. Sorry Doc, I have a problem. I delivered two months ago, and decided to use contraceptive injection as a means of family planning. However, I started seeing my menstrual period, but the problem is, it is 11 days now and I’m still seeing it. Is that a problem or it is normal?

A: Congratulations on your new baby. Different women report different changes with their menstrual periods after child birth. Some report longer periods. Others report shorter periods; some others report less pain and others observe absolutely no change at all 😀

There’s really nothing wrong when you experience prolonged menstrual periods after having a baby. Remember that the baby in your womb had stretched your uterus (womb) and so there’s a lot more surface available for the bleeding to come from. It should normalize after a while. However, if you feel uncomfortable, see your gynaecologist just to be on the safe side.

Be sure to go through with your plan of contraception. Remember that prolonged bleeding does not mean that ovulation is not going on. And so, it will be ‘extremely dangerous’ not to have any means of contraception in place 😀 The result might be a pregnancy before you’d planned for another.

Have a good night, y’all 😀

Daily Health Tips: Urinary Problems

Q: Dr. Ketch, I’m now 60yrs old (male). I seem to have urinary problems. How can I protect it before it’s serious?

A: Thanks for writing in. You didn’t quite define the kind of urinary problems you’re having? Is it pain during urination? Is it difficulty with urination? Is it feeling an urgency to urinate and perhaps urinating on yourself before getting to the toilet? Or perhaps feeling an urgency but not being able to urinate when you get to the toilet? Or a split stream of urine? These are some of the problems that could arise from urination.

Generally, urinary problems could arise from a urinary tract infection, an infection or enlargement of the prostate, straddle injury (falling astride an object), a sexually transmitted infection, cancer etc
