Daily Health Tips : What Do I Take For Stiff Muscles?

Q: What can I take for stiff muscles?

A: Stiff, sore or aching muscles can occur anywhere in the body and may be due to any number of conditions:

• Stress (remember that uncomfortable feeling of your muscles all bunched up?)
• Over-use of the muscle(s) (like when you decide to burn up for all the calories you ate during the festive season in one work-out session 😀 or even making good on your New Year’s resolution to get more activity and then having your ‘lazy’ muscles complain)

Aching or stiff muscles must be taken care of so that they do not become stiffer, weaker or indeed, leave you open to further injuries.
What can help? Generally, increasing blood flow to the muscles involved helps reduce stiffness and improve flexibility. Examples of activities that can lead to this, include:

A good massage never hurt. If you can afford it, give yourself a spa treat and relax under the magical hands of a masseuse and feel the pains, stiffness and soreness flooooaaaat away 🙂

A warm shower may not go amiss too. Just feel the muscles relax under a steady spray of warm water 🙂 A heating pad or hot water bottle can also work some magic.

Nice, gentle stretches can also help ‘iron’ out the kinks in the muscles. Be sure to get some pain relief with analgesics, if pain is persistent.
Good night, people 😀

Daily Health Tips : Does This Terrible Tummy Ache Mean I Am Miscarrying?

Q: Doctor, l missed my period for five days and exactly on the fifth day in the morning l had a terrible stomach ache which latter lead to bleeding and that was how l lost the pregnancy. Please, what could be the cause? Thank you.

A: Interesting question! Did you confirm your pregnancy before this episode of bleeding? Well, if you did and indeed this was a miscarriage, don’t be too hard on yourself. Sometimes, these early miscarriages is nature’s way of ‘removing’ babies that may not have survived for long. Remember that this does not mean that you cannot conceive and have a healthy baby again. You absolutely can!
For those who wondered, it is possible to confirm pregnancy as early as the first day of your missed period, because by then, technically, the person would have been at least 2 weeks pregnant.

I had discussed miscarriage and causes in a previous post. Please click on this link to read more…including how soon you can also start trying for another baby.

Daily Health Tips: Why Did My Wife Miscarry?

Remember that the pregnancy test may read positive for a few weeks even after the miscarriage. I’m not sure you’ve seen a doctor in all this. Be sure to see your doctor to help you through this period and indeed confirm that the pregnancy no longer exists.

Have a good night, people 😀

Daily Health Tips: How Do I Determine The Sex Of My Baby Without Ultrasound Scan?

Q: Please how does one know the sex of the baby in the womb without ultrasound?

A: Hmm! Nice question 😀 If you’re pregnant, you’ve probably heard several variations of what sex of baby different people think you’re carrying. Some would say, If you’re carrying low, it’s a boy and if you’re carrying high, it’s a girl; If you have a lot of morning sickness, then it’s a girl. All of these are amazingly funny and have no basis in fact 😀 I discussed about 20 more of these myths in my book.

Now, how do you determine the sex of your baby without ultrasound and without listening to these old wives’ tales?

Well, ultra sound scan is really your best bet. It is non-invasive and if your baby co-operates by lying in a position that allows the sonographer (the person who performs the ultra sound scan) correctly see the presence or absence of a third leg (the penis), it’s also pretty accurate.

If for any reason, you don’t want to do this (I wonder why???!), there are a few other methods. These methods, however, are invasive (involves the introduction of instruments into the woman’s body) and may lead to miscarriage and other complications and so would not ordinarily be performed just to confirm the sex of a baby.

Amniocentesis: A sample of the fluid surrounding the baby is obtained and analyzed for the chromosome content. This tells us whether the baby is male or female.

Chorionic Villus sampling: A sample of the placental tissue is obtained and analyzed.

If you had your baby through In Vitro Fertilization, before implantation, it is also possible to determine the baby’s sex.

So, there you go! Ultra Sound scan appears to be the safest choice as it is not invasive when compared to the other methods. Another option is to choose not to know 😀 Be pleasantly surprised on the D-Day!

Have a good night, people 😀

Daily Health Tips: Difficulty With Passing Stool

Q: Good day. I am finding it difficult to pass stool and my stool is hard. Please what can I do?

A: Passing hard stools and having less than 3 bowel movements (in other words, stooling less than 3 times per week) is considered constipation. It can be due to lifestyle factors like not having enough fibre in diet, not drinking enough water per day and indeed not getting enough exercise to help move things along.

How can you help this?

Include some fibre in your diet. Fruits and vegetables, oatmeal, local rice and other whole grain meals are helpful.

Drinking at least 8 glasses of water daily. Remember that this number, 8, is not cast in stone. It’s just a helpful guide. If you’re in a hot area, you’ll probably drink more 😀

Get at least 30 minutes of exercise/activity per day or on at least 5 days of the week.

If these do not help, you may want to see your doctor for a proper examination as some diseases like Diabetes Mellitus may also cause constipation.
