Daily Health Tips: Is It Okay If My Baby Starts Teething From The Upper Jaw?

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Q: Doc is there something wrong if a child starts teething on his upper jaw? What are the effects on a child who starts teething upper teeth?

A: When it comes to teething, there are varying grades of normal. The usual time for babies to start teething is between 4 to 10 months. However, some may have developed some teeth as early as three months and some as late as one year. Indeed, some children are born with teeth (neonatal teeth) and that is absolutely not witchcraft as I always say whenever I write on this 😀 If you have more than one child, you would have also noticed differences in the speed or rate of development from one child to the other. Each child is different 😉

In the same way, the bottom central incisors (teeth at the middle of the mouth) are usually the first to sprout. But your…

#HLWDK Daily Health Tips: World Tuberculosis Day

Today is World Tuberculosis Day and this is the same day in 1882 when Dr Robert Koch discovered the bacterium that causes Tuberculosis.

Some background…
Tuberculosis (Tb) is a bacterial infection that mainly affects lungs. The infection could be active in which case the person is sick and can transmit the infection to another person or the infection could be inactive, in which case the infection is present in the body but does not cause infection neither can it be transmitted to another person. However, this latter case, needs to be treated as it can become active.

The issue of Tb has come more to the front burner with the advent of HIV/AIDS which causes a depression of the immune system such that the Tb infection can hold sway. Other conditions that depress the immune system include cancer treatment, some cancers, malnutrition, Diabetes Mellitus, extremes of age (very young or very old) etc

Symptoms of Tb include fever, cough that lasts for 3 weeks or more, coughing up blood, night sweats, weight loss etc
Treatment of Tb involves the use of a combination of drugs to prevent resistance. These drugs must be taken for the full course to prevent resistance. Common drugs used include Rifampicin, Isoniazid, Pyrazinamide and Ethambutol.

In countries like Nigeria, the vaccine BCG is the cornerstone of prevention and this is given to children at birth. Unfortunately, the poor economic conditions in most places in Africa makes this disease spread rapidly if one person gets it as overcrowding due to poor/inadequate housing helps the bacteria spread. Teaching people to cover their coughs and stay in well ventilated places also help.

Daily Health Tips:Why Can’t I Feel My Baby Moving Yet?

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Q: Good afternoon Doc. Please ma’am, I am confused. My pregnancy is 20 wks now and the baby has not started kicking in my tummy. I feel a light movement once in awhile but I expected it to have started that kind of serious kicks. Ma’am please answer me to know what next to do

A: The first time you feel your baby’s movement is known as quickening and the time women feel it varies person to person. It ranges from 16 to 25 weeks but women who have had babies before may feel this much earlier. Women describe it as different things: a bubbly feeling; butterflies in their tummy; gas etc.

You may notice, though when you drink cold water, that baby moves around. This is, theoretically because the uterus/womb is close to the digestive tract such that the cold water in the digestive tract stimulates the…

Daily Health Tips: Why Do I Have Blurred Vision?!

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Q: What is cataracts, glaucoma all about? Has it a natural cure?

A: The lens of the eye is usually clear and is made up of protein and water. As one gets older, the protein gets clumped and vision becomes blurred. Initially, this may not significantly affect vision but with time, it becomes really difficult to read, drive a car etc. It’s like reading through a ‘water fall’ which, by the way, is the meaning of cataract 😀 In the initial stages, using stronger lighting may be helpful but with time, if this worsens and interferes with daily activities, surgery may be the next course of action.

The symptoms of cataract include blurred vision, double vision and difficulty with vision at night. Patients with cataract may also complain of yellowing of colours, seeing halos and being unduly sensitive to light.

Cataracts may occur as a natural process of aging as…

Daily Health Tips: Please Help! I Salivate A lot!

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Q: Please, how can I control my mouth saliva?

A: Ordinarily, we are all able to control the saliva in our mouths despite the enormous amounts produced daily. This is because we swallow it as needed unconsciously.

So, if you become aware of the need to consciously control the saliva in our mouths, then it could be that the production of saliva has increased or that you have a problem with swallowing.
Some causes of increased salivation include pregnancy, throat or mouth infections, some drugs and when new dentures are inserted.

Some causes of difficulty with swallowing include allergies, sinusitis and is also found in people who have Down’s syndrome.
Treatment is usually focused on the cause. So, if you’re not pregnant (:D), you might want to see a doctor to confirm a diagnosis and institute treatment.

And remember, pregnancy or any other condition that might be responsible for excessive…
