Daily Health Tips: Crossed Eyes

Q: Good evening, Doctor. Is there any cure for strabismus in Nigeria?

A: Strabismus (also called crossed eyes or squint) is a condition in which the eyes are not aligned when looking at an object. In this condition, as one eye looks forward, the other eye may turn upwards or downwards or look inwards. Strabismus could be congenital (where the child is born with it) or could develop before the age of 5 years. In these instances, it could happen as the child tries to deal with long or short-sightedness. It can also be seen for the first time in adults and would usually be due to an underlying disease condition like stroke.

Strabismus can lead to double vision in adults or lazy eye in children as they try to suppress vision from the affected eye. The head may be tilted in abnormal positions as they try to focus.

What is the treatment? It is important that treatment is started as soon as possible to preserve vision. Treatment could very well just be eye glasses…remember that thus condition could be due to long or short-sightedness; conditions amenable to eye glasses 🙂

Another treatment option is the use of eye patches to ‘force’ the child to use the lazy eye 😀

Surgery may also be an option to tighten the muscles allowing the eye to ‘wander’.

Speak with your doctor about the treatment option that would work best for you. The first two options are, of course, available in Nigeria 😀 If surgery is needed and is not available in your center, he will be able to let you know what center would offer the procedure in the country.

I hope y’all had a great day!

Have an extra special good night sleep 😀

Daily Health Tips: Oily Face

Q: Hello Dr Ketch, thanks for the great work. Please, what can be done to reduce oil on d face (oily skin)?

A: Oil on the skin is not a bad idea…it makes your skin nice and supple, reduces the appearance of wrinkles etc But you can have too much of a good thing! 😀 Oily face is one of those things.

Hormones, genes and even emotional stress can lead to oily face.
Well, there are a few things you could do to deal with the shine. Here are some dos and don’ts:

Do cleanse your face every morning and evening. In the evening, this particularly important if you use make-up.

Do not use harsh cleansers in the hope that it will remove all the excess oil. It could actually strip your face of its oils leading to even more production of oil as your face gives the feedback that it is very dry.

Do use oil-free cosmetics: make-up, moisturizers, sun screen etc They are also referred to as non-comedogenic.

Do use blotting paper. This is a miracle invention. Every lady with oily face must have a pack. Just a few dabs on the oily spots and you look red-carpet-ready as all the oil ‘disappears’ 😀

If these do not help, lasers and chemical peels may help. These procedures, you can discuss with your dermatologist.

People with oily faces are prone to acne/pimples. For more on acne, please click on this link: https://chatwithdrketch.com/2014/02/21/daily-health-tips-why-do-i-have-acne-pimples/

Daily Health Tips: Can Placenta Previa Recur In My Pregnancy?

Q: Hi Dr, thanks for the great work. I need your help to try and clear my worries. I am 7 weeks pregnant but 2 years back, I had a miscarriage out of the blue and this was my first pregnancy. I just woke up in the middle of the night and I was bleeding heavily but without any pain. I had a c-section but the baby was already dead. This happened towards the first week of the 7th month. The medics didn’t give a clear explanation because of language barrier since I’m an English speaker and they were French. With the help of a nurse who could try English, she told me the cause was a condition called placenta previa. I am worried it could happen again since I wasn’t told of how to stop this. Lots of love from Uganda

A: Thanks a lot for writing in and I love you right back…all the way from Nigeria to Uganda 😀

Condolences on your loss. It is normal after losing a pregnancy to worry whether the same thing will recur in a new pregnancy. It may not. There is a 4 to 8% recurrence rate of placenta previa in a woman who had had this issue before. I will use a personal example. My mum had placenta previa when having her 4th baby and went on to have two other babies afterwards without a repeat incidence. So, there…:D

Placenta previa usually occurs when placenta implants low in the uterine wall and partially and completely covers the cervix (the mouth of the womb). This usually happens when the placenta is bigger than usual (as would happen in multiple pregnancy, women with Diabetes Mellitus etc) or when some form of surgery had been performed on the womb (like previous Caesarian Section, fibroid surgery, induced abortions etc. This condition usually shows up as bleeding from around the second trimester of pregnancy and could lead to pre-term birth, low birth weight, anaemia or even still birth as experienced in this case. In the mother, the bleeding may be severe enough to cause shock.
However, none of these need to happen if this is recognized early and the woman put under proper care with a gynaecologist. Depending on severity of bleeding, the doctor could put the patient on bed rest and in this instance, sexual intercourse may be restricted.

So, I expect that by now you have registered for antenatal care, are taking your medications and taking care of yourself. Be sure that your center has an obstetrician and don’t be shy about voicing any concern you may have to him.

Remember that the odds are in your favour…you’ll be fine 😀

Have a good night, y’all 😀

Daily Health Tips: Should I Let My 3-Week Old Baby Watch Television?

Q: Doctor I am in love with your page. Thank you for all the inspiring words that you use to nourish us daily. Thank you so much.

I have a baby of 3 weeks old, but my question is that I want to know the rightful age for a baby to be allowed to watch television. She will always stare at it but I want to know is she already seeing. Secondly, is it right to sit my baby at this stage. Thank you

A: Thank you so much for your kind words. It does make me happy and fulfilled to know that what I do on this page is useful. Some days when I am exhausted and only thinking about hitting my bed, the very fact that some people are waiting for my daily post, gives me the extra push to go ahead and post.
Now, to your questions…very interesting ones!

At birth, baby sees blurry images only and by the 1st month, he’s able to focus and indeed by 3 months, can recognize familiar faces. When should my child start watching TV? The jury is still out on this one. The American Academy of Paediatrics has a strict guideline that recommends no TV viewing (whether the child is actively watching and even when the child is not watching and TV is just background noise) for children less than 2 years old and after this age, TV viewing should be restricted to one or two hours daily. It is thought that the fleeting images and vibrancy of the colours, makes children expect same in real life and makes them have short attention span. Instead of TV, parents should spend time interacting with their children, reading to them and playing with them. This helps them develop better. On the other hand, some other paediatricians argue that not all TV programs are created equal and that there are some that actually help parents interact with their children. However, the time should be monitored and limited.

The worry about too much TV time is that it can lead to obesity as children go out to play less and perhaps, snack mindlessly in front of the TV. It also exposes children to violence, behavioural problems and poor academic performance.

So, practically speaking, how does this play out? Limit as much as possible, TV time. If you grew up during my days, this wasn’t even an issue as TV stations opened by 4pm and had little or nothing to offer children grin emoticon And so we had to learn to amuse ourselves constructively with building blocks/bricks, reading novels etc. You can do a mix of these with your baby. Let him interact with his world using bricks etc. If you choose to let your child watch some TV, look for educational programs and watch with your baby and talk him/her through it.

Should you put your 3 weeks old baby in a sitting position? No. Baby needs to achieve head and neck control before he can sit and generally, it’s ideal to leave your baby well alone and not put them into positions that they can’t get into or out of by themselves. This essentially means that baby’s development will progress, usually in a predictable manner, with absolutely no help from you! So, enjoy your baby and try not to put a timetable to his development. If any aspect of his development appears delayed, feel free to see his doctor but don’t develop an unrealistic calendar for him based on ‘in our family, that’s how we do it’ or ‘other kids his age are doing that’.

I hope this helps.

Have a great night, y’all grin emoticon

Daily Health Tips: Make It Happen!

It’s International Women’s Day (IWD). Here’s wishing all the female followers of this page (60% of all the page followers!) a very Happy IWD! The theme for this year’s celebration is ‘make it happen!’ That theme thoroughly resonated in me.

Make it happen! Make what happen? Do you remember who you were before the world taught you who you should be? Do you remember the dreams you had before the world told you they couldn’t be achieved? Do you remember the plans you had, before the world told you it was impossible? What would you do differently if you had the chance?

I’ll share a bit of my own story. I was born into a family of doctors and it was always understood that I would be a doctor. I rebelled at some point and decided to apply for Marketing in the university (In my senior year in secondary school, I offered a combination of subjects that would have allowed me apply for medicine, marketing, law etc). Just before the exam, perhaps because my parents let me be, I decided I didn’t need to prove a point and went back to my first love, medicine. However, l felt medicine could be a bit more interesting than the 9 to 5 hospital routine. I will not bore you with the whole story and the whole journey I undertook to prove this 😀

Suffice it to say that in 2010, during a chance conversation with a friend, he mentioned talk show….and that was it! He wasn’t asking me to do a talk show, he was talking about a talk show he had watched but because I had been on a quest to find out what exactly I wanted to do with myself beyond just working’, immediately he said that, it resonated. And that was it! I was in that state of euphoria of ‘I now know exactly what to do with my gift and knowledge’ for about 2 weeks. And then, it hit me…..how do I make this happen? I was a regular medic, worked in a hospital for a while, went into health insurance etc. All my contacts were in these fields. How on earth would I move this dream from my head to the screen? Essentially, what would make it happen?

Well, that answer didn’t come easy. I checked the Internet for production companies, ended up making a couple of errors….scratch that, a lot of mistakes 😀 But I kept seeking…for sponsorship, for help, for advice, for every help I could get! And finally, in 2013 we went on air with our first show. By this time, most of my friends didn’t even know I was still pursuing this dream. But I stayed focused and prayerful and it happened.

So, what is it you want to do? What is it you’re wondering whether you can put together? Go out and make it happen. I came across a saying yesterday and it really resonated with me…Having a dream gets you started, having discipline keeps you going. That discipline is so important when it feels like nothing is happening, but you’re convinced that this is your place. So, dream and have the discipline to keep at it. This message is for women just as it’s also for men. We’ve got all it takes to do great things…we limit ourselves by reminding ourselves of all the reasons why our dreams can’t be achieved. Why not do the reverse and everyday, remind yourself of one new reason why your dream is a sure – banker?

The floor is now open…People, let’s make It happen!

PS: Just in case you wondered the wellness issue here, making your dream happen improves your emotional, mental, spiritual and even physical health 🙂

Daily Health Tips: Abnormal Discharge After Menstrual Period

Q: Good morning ma’am, please I need an advice. After my monthly cycle, I always wet my panties for about one week and some days, with very bad odor. It usually takes up to one week and some days before the odor and the discharge stop; then everything will be normal. It normally starts dropping when my menstrual cycle is rounding up, and it also drops like, menstrual cycle that’s ending. This makes me sometimes think that it’s still part of my menstrual period. But it always stops after some days and then the next menstrual cycle comes up at the expected time.

A: Vaginal discharge is normal and generally helps to keep the vagina healthy. The quantity of discharge varies with menstrual cycle with the most amount of discharge being experienced around the time of ovulation. There is usually a slight odour associated with this discharge but it should not be offensive and should never cause problems like itching or burning sensations.
Generally, you should look out for changes in your vaginal discharge as some may indicate a problem. Examples include:

• Changes in colour eg greenish, brownish etc
• Changes in smell eg fishy smell
• Development of itching or burning sensation
• Increase in quantity of discharge
• Bleeding or spotting outside of menstrual period
• Change in texture eg cheese texture

In your case, the smell is worrisome…you haven’t really told me much about colour or texture. Please see your doctor for a proper evaluation and diagnosis.

Remember that keeping your vagina healthy involves wearing cotton underwear, not abusing antibiotics, not washing your vagina with scented soaps, cleaning from front to the back after using the toilet etc

Daily Health Tips: Milk Shake, Popsicle And Yoghurt Recipes.

Q: Hi Dr Ketch, I love your tips. Please give me a recipe for a nice milk shake for a 4 year old girl

Q: Hi Dr Ketch, can you repeat your recipe for yoghurt. I didn’t catch it all on TV

Q: When I made my yoghurt, it had water on top.

A: In response to the 5-minute shows airing on DSTV, I have received a couple of questions on some of the recipes. So, I will reproduce some of the recipes here.

You can use milk to make some super delicious milk shakes. Everybody loves a milk shake 😀 An easy one to make is a combination of milk, some fruits (eg mango) and crushed ice. Put all into a blender and whizz away. Watch while blending because if you blend for too long, it becomes runny. You want it nice and sorta thick….and utterly delicious!

Another delicious healthy milky/fruity snack you can make for your children is a milk popsicle. Even you will love it! Here’s how:
• You can juice some sweet oranges, or blend mangoes or any other fruit you like.
• Mix it with some milk
• Put it in fruity shaped ice moulds or even a regular ice tray that comes with most freezers or get a popsicle maker and pour it in with your popsicle stick in.
• Allow to freeze
• And….you’ve got the ideal sugar rush snack for your children.

Try it out and feel free to tinker with the recipe whichever way you want!

For yoghurt, I’ll share with you a recipe that I use to make my own special brand of home-made yoghurt. Remember that yoghurt is full of healthy bacteria that may help fight vaginal infections, prevent brittle bones (osteoporosis) in old age because of the calcium content and help digestion amongst other uses. And now for my home made brew…without fancy machines and stuff…

• Get your measuring cups, warm water, a clean dish towel,, some already made (you can use store bought) yoghurt with pro-biotics, an airtight container and milk. This recipe uses powdered milk. Most store-bought yoghurt contain pro-biotics which are live bacteria and yeasts which are god for your health. Weird, right? To think of good bacteria 😀

• Mix one cup of milk with 4 cups of warm water. Whisk it all up.
• Scoop out one cup of the mixture and add a quarter cup of your already made yoghurt that you bought from the shops
• Then pour the mixture from the point above to the milk mixture and whisk.
• Pour in an air-tight container or just cover with a tea towel.
• Do not move, mix or stir the mixture during the ‘setting’ process. Leave it for at least 4 hours. I usually leave mine overnight and wake up to a jar of fabulous home-made yoghurt!
• Remember to whisk the mixture together after it has ‘set’ so that you don’t have the ‘water-on-top’ situation in the last question…or was it a comment? 😀

So, mix up your own batch and after the first go, feel free to mix and match the recipe as you like. As you can see, there was no added sugar to mine…wink. This recipe can also use bottled milk in which case it has to be warmed before (not boiled) before use and repeat all other steps as above.

It’s almost a weekend. Hint, hint! Let’s have you try out some of these recipes 😀

Have a great night, y’all 😀

Daily Health Tips: Gender Selection

Q: Hello Ma’am,I want to thank you for your inspiring sensitizations both on the television and Facebook. May God continue to bless and enrich you. Secondly, I’ll like you to throw light on the issue of gender selection in pregnancy, baby girl to be precise. Thank you

A: Amen to all your prayers!

The issue of gender selection raises ethical concerns worldwide as it is feared that it could lead to neglect of the ‘undesired’ gender. It used to be thought that sexual intercourse on certain days or using certain positions guaranteed one sex or another, but these methods are pretty much unreliable.

Some people who undergo invitro fertilization (IVF), may be offered a procedure called Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis. This involves screening your embryos for the preferred sex. This procedure is not routinely/indiscriminately offered and is actually banned in some countries except there is a medical reason for it. Did I also mention that it costs a small fortune?

So, what are your options? Be thankful for whatever baby you get….male or female and give them all the love you have in you. The grass is always greener in the neighbour’s backyard and so we always yearn for that which we don’t have. Turn the tables around and be thankful for that which you do have. Remember that if you have boys, it’s only a matter of time before you have daughters…when your son(s) marry 😀

Have a good night, people 😀

Daily Health Tips: Difficulty With Urination.

Q: Good morning ma’am, I am 22 years old and I’ve been battling with ‘hardship urine’ since when I was 18 years. I have gone to hospital several times and I’ve tried different antibiotics but there is no change up till now. I never had sexual Intercourse with anyone. I don’t know what to do.

A: Thanks a lot for writing in.
I want to believe that hardship urine means difficulty with urinating. I will reproduce a post I had done on this subject.
You didn’t quite define the kind of urinary problems you’re having? Is it pain during urination? Is it difficulty with urination? Is it feeling an urgency to urinate and perhaps urinating on yourself before getting to the toilet? Or perhaps feeling an urgency but not being able to urinate when you get to the toilet? Or a split stream of urine? These are some of the problems that could arise from urination.

Generally, urinary problems could arise from a urinary tract infection, an infection or enlargement of the prostate, straddle injury (falling astride an object), a sexually transmitted infection, cancer etc

So, to help you out, please click on the links below to have a better idea of what it could be.
