A: Hello! Thanks for writing in.

I had written a post on swimmer’s ear as part of a post I wrote on the ears. I reproduce same below. Very interesting! 😀

How come you feel sad or cry when a sad song is played? Think about it…that’s right. It’s because you heard the lyrics and perhaps it tugged at a memory. What about the pain you feel when that person you care about hurls some really nasty words at you? It’s almost like your heart is going to break, right?
All these emotions can be experienced through one gateway only…the ears!

#HLWDK Daily Health Tips: What Causes Burning Sensation Under The Feet In The Elderly?

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Q: What causes burning sensation under the feet in the elderly?

A: People 45 years or older may be more likely to have this and it shows up during activity or even at night making sleep difficult. It may be temporary or permanent depending on the cause.

Some causes of this sensation include:
Peripheral neuropathy: This is a situation where peripheral nerves (a network of nerves which connect the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body) are damaged with resultant symptoms like tingling or burning sensations. Diabetes Mellitus is a common cause of this problem

Menopause: The hormonal changes in menopause may lead to the feeling of ‘heat’ in the feet etc

Other conditions that could cause this include vitamin deficiency, alcohol abuse, kidney or liver problems, HIV/AIDS, low thyroid hormone levels, heavy metal posioning etc.

The treatment, of course, would depend on the cause. So, please…

Daily Health Tips: What Can Cause Premature Menopause?

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Q: Good morning, ma’am. Please I’d like to ask a question. If a lady does not have sex regularly, can she quickly enter menopause?

A: Interesting question! 😀

Menopause is a period defined by at least 12 months of cessation of menstrual period. It occurs as a natural process of aging which can start as early as late 30s as the ovaries start making less amounts of hormones with an average age of about 51 years. Menopause can also be induced by chemotherapy or radiotherapy (treatment for cancers), surgical removal of the ovaries etc. This is called Premature Menopause. This is also likely to run in families.

Now, in all the probable causes (natural or induced), none of it includes sexual intercourse (at all, a little or too much). Menopause is, absolutely, not affected by this.

Have a good night, peep 😉

Olive oil or coconut oil: Which is worthy of kitchen-staple status? – Harvard Health

Olive oil has always been the poster boy for all things good – anointing (in the christian circles) and healthy (in the culinary and healthy eating circles). And then, from nowhere, in comes coconut oil! All of a sudden, the media is awash with all the great health benefits of coconut oil for the skin, hair and general health, pushing former super star, Olive oil, to the background 😀

This post reviews both oils and proclaims a winner. And the winner is…..

You have to read this to know!

Daddy or Father…which are you?

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

It was Fathers’ day on Sunday and people rolled out the drums to celebrate  fathers, dead or alive. Mine unfortunately is dead…but the memories linger on (sigh!)

Methinks it was also a time for sober reflection. Am I a father or a daddy? Now before I start with my definitions, let me quickly issue the disclaimer that the definitions I am about to give probably do not exist in any other dictionary available as at today or planned for the future, except ‘the Dr Ketch book of stuff and things’ (copyright reserved :D). There! That’s done. On to the business of the day!

As I was going to say, a father is…well, one who fathers a child. In other words he provides the counterpart chromosome for a baby to be made. A bit like counterpart funding for a project :D. This doesn’t require much in terms of time, emotion, focus…

#HLWDK Daily Health Tips: Painful Gum

Q: Good evening doctor please I have a little problem with the gum of my teeth, it swallow up and I have a pain there when ever am eating. What can I do?

A: Your brushing and flossing techniques could be the culprits. If you use very hard bristles, you could be causing significant damage to your gum.

If you also floss by forcing the floss in between your teeth, then this could very well be the cause of the problem.

Where the problem is not caused by your wrong ‘hygiene’ techniques, it could be due to gum disease. Gum disease arises due to lack of good dental hygiene which causes plaque forming bacteria to accumulate in the mouth and lead to painful, swollen and bleeding gums. If this happens and is noticed early, it can be reversed before it starts causing tooth loss and weakening of the gum and bone structure holding the teeth (periodontitis). Other culprits could be hormones (during pregnancy or menstruation) and chemotherapy.

Prevention is targeted at the causes:

Brush your teeth at least twice a day using soft bristled tooth brushes. Brush in circular motions, gently removing the plaque and massaging the gums. Mentally divide your mouth into four sections and be sure to spend at least 30 seconds on each section of your teeth brushing all sides and chewing surfaces.

Floss daily, following the natural curve of your teeth. This activity does not take too long but spares you a lifetime of woes :D.

Eat a well-balanced diet with lots of fruits and veggies. This ensures that you have the right supply of minerals and vitamins which helps prevent gum disease.

Drink a lot of water which ensures that plaque forming bacteria are washed off teeth. Ensure that other fluids you take are neither too hot or too cold. Lukewarm food goes easier on your gums.

Finally, relax as the stress hormone cortisol can significantly contribute to swelling and bleeding of your gums by causing inflammation. Can you imagine…stressing out over Lagos traffic can actually cause my gums to bleed! 😉

Have a great night y’all 😀

#HLWDK Daily Health Tips: Sweating And Headaches

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Q: Dr. please why sweating profusely is on with me? My BP always 150/100 but thank God, it was 139/90 on my last clinic. Question 1) early headache between 4-6am. 2) pains from my left shoulder to fingers most time and slurping of morning saliva. Age 65yrs. Please tips of stroke and signs.

A: Thanks for writing in. There are a number of questions here. We’ll take some today and the others tomorrow.

Sweating is normal during strenuous physical activity and in warm weather. In fact, as we sweat and it evaporates, we actually feel cooler. Unfortunately, for some people sweating is an issue as they ‘appear’ to pour the stuff by the buckets or would start the day with patches of sweat on their under-arms etc. This inevitably leads to body odour.

However, there may be other medical causes for your sweats. Symptoms that may suggest medical causes include…

Daily Health Tips: Real food vs Supplements.

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Excerpts from Redeemed Camp seminar:

Q: Are supplements good alternatives to fruits and vegetables?

A: Nothing beats a healthy diet filled with fruits and vegetables to keep you healthy and able to fight all manner of diseases. Supplements, as the name implies are meant to plug in the tiny holes that may not be completely filled by your diet. For instance, if your diet regularly misses out on dairy products despite the recommendation of at least 3 servings per day, you probably need calcium and Vitamin D supplements. If, however, you’re a junk food lover, there’s no magic pill that can take care of your problem. What you need is a menu make-over focusing on portion control and right plating with the different food groups. Remember that to plate right, half your plate should be filled with fruits and vegetables, a quarter with proteins and the last quarter with complex…
