Daily Health Tips: Female Circumcision

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Q: Good day Dr, please I need more enlightenment on child circumcision: is it also for female child? And what is the reason for it? Is there any negative effect?

A: Thank you so much for writing in. Circumcision is a no-no for the female child. This procedure called Female Genital Mutilation has been recognized as a violation of the fundamental human rights of the girl child and it has absolutely no medical benefit. Indeed, it subjects poor, defenseless and innocent children to needless pain and torture!

For those who don’t know, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), also referred to as female circumcision is a procedure in which there is partial or complete removal of the female genitals or any other injury to the female genital organs for reasons other than medical. So, practices like cutting off all or part of the clitoris, cutting off the surrounding lips of the vagina…

Daily Health Tips: What Foods Should I Avoid If I Have Peptic Ulcer?

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Q: Hi doctor, please how can I treat stomach ulcer and what are the foods I need to eat and the ones to avoid eating? Thanks

A: Gastric acid is secreted normally in the stomach to help the process of digestion. Peptic ulcer is a sore in the stomach, esophagus or duodenum and occurs when there is either over-production of this gastric acid in the stomach or reduction in the quantity of mucous that protects the stomach from the acid. Infection with an organism, Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) has been found to be a cause of peptic ulcer.

In the past, it was thought that spicy foods caused peptic ulcers. However, there’s no evidence to support this, though spicy foods can certainly make the symptoms of ulcer worse 😀 Smoking, stress and drinking alcohol are also likely to worsen the symptoms of peptic ulcer. Caffeinated and carbonated beverages may also…

#HLWDK Daily Health Tips: Swollen Legs After A Flight

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Q: Hello Dr, I have been having swollen legs since I traveled almost 17hrs by air. All tests been done, no fault discovered. What shall I do?

A: Hello dear, thanks for writing in.

Swelling of the legs and feet during flights is common and usually not suggestive of a more serious problem. It happens when blood pools in the leg veins due to long periods of inactivity as can occur during a long-haul flight. This swelling usually lasts for a few hours. If the swelling persists, occurs more in one leg and is associated with leg pain, please see your doctor immediately as it may be suggestive of a more serious problem, like a blood clot in the leg.

I repeat a post I made some years back on preparing for flights. It focuses on preventing the condition you already have. However, if you already have swollen legs due…

Daily Health Tips: How Can I Build My Blood?!

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Q: What does it take to build blood?

A: Anaemia occurs when the amount of red blood cells in the blood is not enough. Simply put, a shortage (deficiency of red blood cells). To confirm this diagnosis, a Full Blood Count (FBC) or Packed Cell Volume (PCV) test is done.

Iron is needed to produce new red blood cells. Folic acid and Vitamin B-12 are also important in the process. To make up deficiency of red blood cells(or to build the blood, in the words of the gentleman that asked this), iron and vitamin intake should be increased. Supplements are an option, however, as I always say, supplements are meant to plug holes that exist in the diet and not be the main stay of the diet itself. So, it’s much better to eat iron rich food like: eggs, shellfish, beans and other legumes, green leafy vegetables, lean red meat, iron-enriched…

The gateway to the heart!

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

How come you feel sad or cry when a sad song is played? Think about it…that’s right. It’s because you heard the lyrics and perhaps it tugged at a memory. What about the pain you feel when that person you care about hurls some really nasty words at you? It’s almost like your heart is going to break, right?

All these emotions can be xperienced through one gateway only…the ears!

Have you ever wondered whether you’re taking good care of your ears? Weird question, right? Like, what can go wrong with your ears? They generally mind their business on the sides of our heads and more often than not, we don’t even notice them. That’s kind of why when you take the pains to look behind them, especially for children, you find ‘amazing’ stuff behind them…disgustingly smelly stuff, that much I can tell you!

Well, I never used to pay…

4 things all parents should do to help prevent sexual abuse – Harvard Health

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

I came across this Harvard Health post and it reminded me of a question I had responded to on this page some years back. I repeat same here. Enjoy…

Q: Thanks Dr Ketch for all your advice. Please, at what age should my hubby stop bathing my daughter? She is 6yrs old now. During the week, we leave home early and so we help each other because we don’t want to have a house help and most times he helps with bathing the children.

A: Hmmm! Very valid question! You guys are getting into interesting territories! Important territories, too 😀

This issue actually goes both ways and indeed, the question should also be asked about when mothers should stop bathing their sons.
Children need their privacy and sooner than later may feel the need to voice out their need for this. I’m sure the husband in this case does not fall…

Daily Health Tips: What Foods Can I Give My Baby From 6 Months?

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Q: Hi Dr Ketch. I watched you on DSTV and I have a question. Please, give me a food time table to start with when my baby is 6 months. And timings, if possible. It’s a baby boy.

A: Hi dear. Congratulations on your new baby.

Your question is a favouirite for new mums. I reproduce below a post I had made on this.

Weaning can be a trying period for a mum…when should I start? What should I give? For how long? What if he doesn’t like it? Just like adults, a good number of babies are resistant to change. They are comfortable eating what they had been eating? Life was good…why do you want to change it???? 😀 Okay, that’s some babies. Others are more than happy to move on to the next stage!

When to start? At 6 months. From birth to 6 months, please focus on exclusive breastfeeding…

Daily Health Tips: Causes Of Haemophilia

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Q: Good morning Doc; what are causes of haemophilia?

A: Hallos. Thanks for writing in.

You take for granted the fact that when you have an injury, you may bleed but your body quickly acts to stop the bleeding by forming clots. Have you ever wondered how all that stuff that forms in front of wounds (the wound scabs) get there? I’m sure you’ve not. These are all things we take for granted…like breathing, until there comes a time when one can’t breathe! Okay, let’s not get too morbid 😀

There are, however, those people who do not take for granted the fact that when they bleed, the bleeding will stop because their bodies will release clotting factors that ensure they don’t bleed to death. For this group of people, their bodies lack clotting factors and thus, when they bleed, this could go on for a long…

#HLWDK Daily Health Tips: Dos And Don’ts Of Cancer

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Tomorrow is World Cancer Day. So, I will dedicate this weekend to cancers.

Can your lifestyle contribute to cancer? Yes it can! Here are some tips to help you make the right choices.

Dos

  • Eat healthy. More fruits and vegetables which are full of anti-oxidants which help protect the body against free radicals that lead to cancer. Eat less animal fats. Green leafy vegetables are rich in substances that are thought to protect against cancer of the mouth, esophagus, and stomach. These vegetables are also rich in folic acid which helps your body produce new cells and repair DNA, and is especially important for women of childbearing age because it can prevent neural tube (spinal cord) defects in a developing fetus . You get the most of these nutrients when the leaves are eaten raw or slightly cooked. So please don’t smother them in oil!!!

  • Exercise as this helps you lose…

Daily Health Tips:Excessive Fetal Movements Et Al

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Q: Hello Doctor Ketch, I’ve been reading a lot of your answers to questions and I also need some answers. I am 7 months pregnant and the fetal movement has become too much and too forceful. Sometimes I’m scared the baby will kick itself out of me. Some mornings, during breakfast, I have the urge to vomit and I bring up all I must have eaten after which I feel very weak. At this point of the pregnancy, my breasts are still the same in size. I really wonder if they’re producing milk. Then the pain I feel between my thighs is becoming unbearable. It makes it difficult for me to stand up from the bed. Please kindly throw more light on all I’ve mentioned, with possible causes and remedies. This is my first pregnancy. Thanks.

A: The first time you feel your baby’s movement is known as quickening…
