Daily Health Tips: Weight Loss (The Role Of Lemons And Exercise)

Q: Good day ma’am, I really want to slim down, I can’t get lemon where I’m staying and there is no gym too. I need you to help. Thanks in advance

A: Thanks for writing in and you really need to forgive me, but your question gave me a good laugh! 😀

I wish weight loss was just a simple matter of lemons 😀 That would be great. Sweetheart, you do not need lemons to lose weight. It’s a simple formula: exercise and diet!

Now, if you don’t have a gym where you stay, there are millions of ways to get your exercise.

At home
• Do not send people to run all your errands. Go do them yourself. Go and pick up the cup, get the water you want etc
• Get up during commercial breaks and dance to the music of the commercials
• Start a pillow fight with your children, if you have, friends or significant other
• Arm wrestle with anyone who wants to take you on.
• Take a walk when you get home.
• Get up whenever you get a phone call and jog on the spot or just walk around.

While commuting (going to or from work)
• If you use a bus, stop at least a bus stop from your normal bus stop and walk the rest of the distance. This also goes for you if you’ve got a driver/chauffeur. Be sure the environment is safe in both instances.
• If you drive, pack a farther distance away from your normal spot at work and walk the rest of the distance to walk.

At work
• Use the stairs and ditch the elevators
• Go and pick up your printouts…don’t send the office assistant to get it.
• Get up and walk around whenever you get a call
• Consider the idea of having a walking meeting with a colleague
• If you’re part of the Human Resource team, consider putting water dispensers on stair wells so that people have to walk up and down the stairs to get to them. Some music there would not go amiss too 😀

Other times
Dancing, swimming, playing lawn tennis, volley ball and all the other games available that get you moving are great ways of exercising. And yes, this includes those video games that actually get you to get up and dance/move.

Remember that the recommendation is for 150 minutes of exercise/activity every week. And so with the above, there’s no more excuse. You can split this into 30 minutes, Monday to friday or one hour on three days of the week.

As for diet, this post from last year, answers it all. Take a look https://chatwithdrketch.com/2014/11/27/daily-health-tips-weight-loss-revisited/

Have a great week ahead, y’all 😀

Daily Health Tips: Is It Okay To Wear Panty Liners Daily?

Q: If you don’t know what panty liners are, just imagine a very flat sanitary towel worn on the panties to absorb vaginal secretions.

A: So, is there anything wrong with wearing them every day? Well, these liners have a nylon back so that they can collect the vaginal secretions and leave the panties dry and fresh. However, for this same reason, they do not allow the ‘vagina’ to breathe and so, create a warm moist environment for fungi to thrive. It has been suggested that women who wear panty liners regularly are more prone to infections (fungal and bacterial) than others. Theoretically, it makes sense but the evidence base for it is not very robust/significant.

So, here’s the thing…if you must wear panty liners daily, be sure to change them frequently. Every four hours would be a good measure. Otherwise, just be sure to follow the golden rules of vaginal hygiene.

Daily Health Tips: Contraception

Hello y’all 😀 I hope the year has got off to a great start!

Q1: Good day ma’am .Please, is it true that you won’t get pregnant as long as your period hasn’t returned after childbirth and you’re breastfeeding? My baby is seven weeks old but I’m scared of resuming my wifey duty. I give my baby formula and breast milk. Thank you, doc.

A: This question has been asked so many different times but it bears repeating. Breast feeding used to be considered a means of contraception but not anymore. Women can exclusively breastfeed and still get pregnant while doing that. Whether their periods have returned or not is immaterial because remember that before a period, comes ovulation. If a woman who has ovulated has sexual intercourse, she may very well get pregnant, before menstruating for the first time after having her baby.

As for when to resume wifely duties…whenever you feel up to it. For more on when to resume sexual intimacy, please click on this link

Daily Health Tips: When Is A Good Time To Resume Sexual Intimacy After Childbirth?

Q2: Good day. I am 30 years of age and I got married recently. My husband and I are not ready to have babies yet, because I have 2 more years to round off my degree program. Also I want to use baby friendly breast feeding method for my children. My husband and I also are in 2 different states. He totally agrees with waiting because he doesn’t want either me or the baby stressed, since he will not always be physically there for us.

Now my question is, what is the best (without side effects) family planning measure to take to prevent pregnancy? He is currently practicing withdrawal, but I know that it cannot be totally trusted because i don’t think he can carry on like this for 2years.

A: There is no contraceptive that is 100% fool proof. They all have their pros and cons and really the best method for each couple depends on personal preferences, cost, ease of using it, intended duration of use etc
Withdrawal method of contraception can certainly take its toll and may not be the most effective method. Please click on the link below for more on this.

Daily Health Tips: Is Withdrawal Really The Best Method Of Birth Control?

I suggest that you walk into a family planning clinic where a nurse will take you through all the different methods and arm you with the information for you and your husband to make a choice as to the best method for you. Be sure to do this as soon as possible, if you don’t want to have to take a nanny back to school soon 😀

Daily Health Tips: Why Do I Feel Pain During Sexual Intercourse?

Q: Good day doctor,l got married last year august and that month happen to be my first time of having sex, am a female and since then have been having painful sexual intercourse. Have been to the hospital , the doctor said this can be as a result of tight vaginal passage, inadequate lubrication or lack of affection. l was given xylocaine gel to aid my vaginal lubrication even with the use of this the pain is still there. l went back to see the doctor. He sent me to do HVS test with which CANDIDA ALBICAN was identified and l was given CLOTRIMAZOLE VAGINAL TABLET to use with which the pain is still there. DOCTOR, what else can l do?

Q: Hello Dr, I just got married and I always have pain in my bladder during sexual intercourse. What should I do? And what is the cause? Kindly help me please.

A: Pain during sexual intercourse is more common with women but can also happen in men. The first question above was sent in by a woman and the second one was sent in by a man. This condition is called dyspareunia in medicine.

Dyspareunia is a condition in which one experiences pain during or after sexual intercourse. In women, the cause may be due to:
• Vaginismus: a condition in which the vaginal muscles go into spasms when an attempt is made at penetration.
• Lack of adequate lubrication eg due to hasty foreplay etc
• Infections of the vagina (like candidiasis as mentioned in the question) or urinary tract can also cause pain during sexual intercourse.
• Injuries/wounds to the vagina
• Emotional issues like stress or emotional disconnect from partner.
• Fibroids around the vagina or cervix

In men, the cause of this problem could be due to:
• Infection of the urethra (the tube which conveys urine from the bladder out of the body and also conveys semen out during ejaculation)
• Infection of the prostate gland.
• Infections, some of which may be due to STI
• Emotional issues may also be involved eg feelings of guilt.

Treatment depends on cause. If due to infections, they have to be treated. If it’s due to lack of lubrication, that has to be handled. Some lubricating gels may be suggested. If no physical cause can be seen and the problem appears to be emotional, some counseling may be required. Understanding that when people get married, they are actually two ‘strangers’ trying to get to know each other, should form part of the incentive for slowing down and trying to find out what pleases each member of the union.
