#HLWDK Daily Health Tips: Quick Hygiene Tips

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Here are some quick tips to ensure that you have fresh breath all day long.

• Limit or stop tobacco use. If you smoke, quit. Your bad breath may be due to other causes, too, but tobacco use is a guarantee of bad breath. If you are ready to quit, ask your doctor or dentist for advice and support.
• Watch what you eat. Certain foods, such as garlic, contribute to bad breath, but only temporarily. Once they are absorbed into the bloodstream, the smell is expelled through the breath, but the odors remain until the body processes the food, so there’s no quick fix.
• Drink/sip some water often. If your mouth is extremely dry, there is not enough saliva to wash away excess food particles and bacteria, which can cause an unpleasant smell if they build up on the teeth.
• See your dentist at least twice…

#HLWDK Daily Health Tips: Christmas Shopping

Hello everyone! Merry Christmas!!!

AS we all race around town trying to get the last of the Christmas shopping done, please be sure to prevent cross-contamination of food.

Harmful bacteria can pass to raw foods to other food produce some of which we even eat raw. These germs may not cause much harm to adults but could cause very serious infections in children and other people with fragile immune systems.

Let’s give you our top tips for preventing cross-contamination while shopping.
•    If you go to the open market, be sure to go with enough shopping bags. That way you can separate your raw meats/fish from your other foods.
•    If you shop in grocery stores, separate the foods in the shopping cart. You could use the shopping carts that have two baskets. Use one for your fish and meats and use the other for your other foods.
•    When checking out your purchases at the grocery shops, ensure that the attendants keep these food stuff separate. In addition, keep dry foods separate from wet/refrigerated foods. This keeps the different food stuff fresh until you get home and store them appropriately.
•    Maintain this separation in the car, bus or taxi that you will take home. It may be more convenient to pack everything in one bag, but I assure you it is not healthier.
•    Finally, before you start cooking when you get home, be sure to wash your hands as you have handled money and loads of food stuff which may have deposited myriads of germs on your hands.

If we keep our foods safe from contamination from the time we buy them to the time we take them home, we have a better chance of ensuring they are fresh and delivering the right nutrients to us by the time we cook them.

Happy Holidays, everyone!

Daily Health Tips: Stress free Christmas

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

t is Christmas eve! Merry Christmas, people!!

The words of a popular Christmas song proclaims this season as a wonderful and magical time of the year. There’s something wonderful about completing a cycle…from January to December. Celebrating love, joy and peace on earth. Celebrating God’s goodness in our lives.

As we mark the birth of Christ, may He renew all our commitments made earlier in the year…especially to healthy living 😀 (you guessed that was coming, right?!)

So, be sure to ensure that as you feast this season, you have loads of colour on your plate…salads, steamed vegetables, grilled vegetables etc. Try running over to the shops yourself for that last minute ‘I forgot to buy’ to get some exercise and indeed, if you can get to the gym do so; play lots of songs or Christmas carols and dance along.

Go easy on the frying. Instead, grill, roast or…

#HLWDK Daily Health Tips: Good And Bad Cholesterol

I came across this post in my archives and since we were drawing close to the end of the year, felt it was apt for this season.
It seemed like only yesterday when we started the year…and now it has practically run its course! At times like this, we all start to take stock of the year that is about to end: what we did and didn’t do. We all love to flog ourselves for all the plans we had that didn’t materialize but hey, for these last few weeks/days of 2010 just have a praise party! Focus on the good things and praise God and yourself for how far you have come this year. Be thankful that though you’re not quite where you would have liked to be, but you’re certainly better than you were last year. Indeed, you are one year older, wiser and I hope, healthier! 😀 And now, the question for the day speaks to a post I had made before and so I reproduce same below: Q: Dr, I would like to know how one can remove bad/excess cholesterol from the body. A: Now, the first lesson we all need to learn is that cholesterol is not completely a demon 😀 There is the good cholesterol and the bad cholesterol. So, when we talk about high cholesterol, we usually refer to the bad one, Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) Cholesterol, which can lead to blockage of the vessels and inevitably, a heart attack…not good news! But we do need the good one, High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. It mops up excess cholesterol and prevents LDL from being changed into the form that causes heart disease. Indeed, we are encouraged to take foods that increase this and this in turn improves heart health. So, what foods can help reduce bad cholesterol in the body and increase the level of good cholesterol? Here are some examples:Oats and other whole grains which form soluble fiber that reduce the absorption of cholesterol and in addition, give you a feeling of satiety for long. This prevents you feeling hungry more often and reaching for ‘unhealthy’ snacks 😀 Other foods in this group include okro, beans, apples, citrus fruits and garden egg (egg plants). Soya beans, heart healthy oils like Olive oil and Canola oil, nuts (which should only be served in handfuls) and fatty fish like mackerel also reduce LDL. Generally eating healthy with lots of fruits and vegetables, cutting out the white carbs (pastries etc), exercising (at least 150 minutes weekly), ensuring you are not overweight and quitting smoking.
Have a good evening everyone 😀

Daily Health Tips:Should I Do Something About My Baby’s Tongue Tie?

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Q: Good day doctor, thank you for the beautiful work, may God almighty reward you abundantly. Please I observed a light skin under my 10 weeks old baby’s tongue (tie tongue), I’ve been to the hospital and I was told that inasmuch the baby is crying well and moving the tongue, there is no problem. What’s your opinion on this ma’am?

A: Thanks for writing in.

In babies with tongue tie, there’s a tight piece of skin holding the tongue down from the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth. This is also called ankyloglossia and could affect baby’s ability to latch on properly to suckle (as the tongue does not cover the lower gum). This can lead to baby chomping on mum’s nipple with resultant sore nipples.

First thing, do not be scared. Even if indeed, she has tongue tie, it’s not a huge problem. Some…

#HLWDK Staph And Infertility

Q: Please ma’am, I have been married for two years now with no issue (child) yet. but the problem is that we have treated infections several times and it keeps coming back (staphylococcus) I don’t know what to do. I need your advice

A: Staphylococcus has received a bad rap over the years, especially in Nigeria. A whole lot of TV advert time in the past was devoted to traditional/alternative/native medicine practitioners who all claimed a cure for this ‘terrible’ Sexually Transmitted Infection. After the airwaves were made off limits, attention moved to the print media where all manner of cures are touted for ailments ranging from the indomitable staph to fibroids! Have you read about how some drugs can make people excrete their fibroids out???! I shake my head in wonder 😀

Generally, Staphylococcus, Staph for short, are bacteria which can be found in people’s noses or skin all over the body, minding their own business until a cut or injury occurs giving the germs access into the body. This is the reason why surgeons meticulously scrub sites for surgery before they make a single cut because infections caused by Staph can be deadly. They usually cause infections like boils but can also get into the blood, as described for surgery above, and cause infections too. They are also responsible for Staphylococcal food poisoning and Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) as can happen in people who use tampons.

People who are more at risk of Staph infections include breastfeeding mothers, new born babies, diabetics, people with sores/injuries of any sort and also people with compromised immune systems.

It is usually spread by direct contact with an infected sore or use of infected personal care items like shave sticks, plasters or bandages.

Technically, Staph infections are not considered Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI); however, because Staph is spread through skin to skin contact, it can cause an STI if there is contact between the genitals and the area with a Staph infection. Remember also, that these bacteria are found on the skin and so can show up in urine. Thus, if this was isolated in your urine, it does not mean that it is sexually transmitted. As part of the test carried out in isolating the organism in your urine, specific antibiotics would have been shown as being active against the organism. Be sure to use this and complete the dose.

Given that Staph infections are spread through person to person contact, practicing good hygiene is a great idea. Wash your hands often especially after contact with situations described above. Remember that you can also spread the infection from one part of your body to another, so it is important to keep wounds clean and properly covered. If a towel is used to clean the area, this should be done once and then the towel washed in hot water. Do not share items of personal care like towels and be sure to bath every day.

Menstruating ladies who use tampons should be sure to change them often to prevent TSS.

On not having a child yet…not being able to have a child at the time that we expect it can be a harrowing experience…especially in Africa where a couple of months into your marriage, family members and even outsiders are beginning to look at you in suggestive ways. Some actually ask outright, ‘when are you guys planning to start having babies?’
However, in the medical world, we can only agree that perhaps there might be an issue after one full year of trying to have babies with no luck. This, however, implies that there is frequent and unprotected sexual intercourse. Frequency in this respect means that sexual intercourse should be at least 3 times in a week. Unprotected means that there should be no barrier protection like a condom. Don’t laugh…this has been known to happen. People use a condom and then expect to get pregnant J The ejaculate (semen) should also be of significant volume.

Therefore, if this has been established to have been happening for one year, the next thing is to run tests. The less ‘invasive’ tests are usually done first. This usually involves the husband who provides his semen for analysis. Other tests will now be run on the wife, which presumably has already happened in the case above.

Some causes of infertility in men include problems with the production of sperm, problems with the delivery of sperm, being exposed to environmental toxins (like sitting in hot tubs) and cancer.

Some causes of infertility in women include problems with ovulation, problems with the uterus and cervix, blockage or damage of the fallopian tube, thyroid problems, cancer etc. Fibroids may or may not cause inability to have a pregnancy. It depends on size and position. Big fibroids in the area of the womb where a baby is meant to implant may cause a miscarriage or indeed, failure of the fertilized embryo to implant. Your doctor will take a decision on what to do with the fibroids based on size, symptoms etc., if this is still a problem.

Other risk factors for both sexes include use of alcohol and tobacco, being overweight or even underweight and age (the older people get, the more difficult it is to get pregnant).
Where a problem is identified, this is taken care of through various options like the use of drugs or surgery.

Oftentimes, no reason can be found for infertility. In these instances, the couple may want to consider assisted reproduction. Your doctor will discuss the different options available in your area and if you can afford it, he will suggest other centers where better facilities exist.

Prevention of infertility is targeted at the risk factors. Quit smoking, reduce alcohol consumption, exercise moderately and keep your weight within normal limits.
Infertility is really nerve wracking, because nobody has an idea how long it’s going to last or what treatments are going to work best. Joining support groups and/or counseling sessions may be helpful during this period of waiting, patiently and prayerfully

I hope y’all had a great day?

#HLWDK Daily Health Tips: Stuttering

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Q: Good day Doc. Thanks so much for your medical lectures on Facebook. God will continue to strengthen you. I am a first time mother I had my daughter last December. During the 1st trimester I was bleeding heavy but later stopped after medical consultation but I noticed my daughter is using only her left hand and holding the right hand so tight but if I force to open it and move it I found out nothing is wrong with it. My question is how can I help her to use the right hand too. Thanks ma’am as I await your response. God bless

A: It does sound like you assume the bleeding affected your daughter’s preference of what hand to use? If you think so, you’re wrong. No link.

Now, please be sure that there is really nothing wrong with your baby’s right hand. The way you describe her…

Fewer allergies: A possible upside of thumb sucking and nail biting – Harvard Health

Q: Hi, Good day ma’am! Thanks a lot for the way you have been helping lots of people with their problems. How does one stop a child from sucking her thumb always in a healthy way?
A: Interesting question!
Children suck their thumbs at an early age as a means of soothing themselves or coping with stress/anxiety or even when bored. Usually, this habit would stop between the ages of 2 to 4 years old. If it continues longer than that your baby’s teeth start to give way to accommodate the thumb leading to a situation where your baby’s upper teeth no longer align properly with the lower teeth. It can also lead to speech problems. How do you stop a child from sucking his thumb? Hmm, I’m sure that lots of people can share a lot from their personal experiences eg tying up the thumb, putting terrible tasting stuff on it like vinegar, mustard, bitter leaf, nail polish etc. In some instances, these harsh methods get children to stop this habit but they probably latch on to another habit, like bedwetting. So, we do not advocate any of these.
What can you do as a parent? Well, if the child, is not 6 years yet, ignoring the thumb sucking is an option. Don’t go into a big fuss and fight about it. He’s more likely to stop because some children teased him about it that the fact that you screamed about it.
Talk to him about why sucking his thumb is a bad idea. Talk to him about germs that he’s giving free access into his body etc and be sure to praise him when he’s not sucking his fingers/thumb. In fact, you could go as far as providing a reward to re-enforce this good behavior.Remember that before the age of 6 years, we still believe that your baby will kick this habit all by himself. He usually does about the age of 4-5 years.
Now that was my answer some years back. The post below suggests that there may actually be benefits to this habit! :O Read!

Daily Health Tips: Why Is My Baby Stooling?

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Q: Good evening doctor. Please, what could be the cause of this? My 10-week old baby has been stooling for almost a week now. Thanks

Top of Form

A: Congratulations on your new baby! May she be a blessing to her generation!

Okay to your question, exclusively breast fed babies may pass stool a couple of times during the day to lots of time (it might even be after every meal :D).  You’re still getting to know your baby and so you should look out for the normal consistency of his stools and the frequency. Diarrhea is usually rare in exclusively breast fed children because you’ve cut off all the middle men like bottles and teats etc that could have been reservoirs of infection. If you do practice bottle feeding, you have to be committed to be hygienic because you don’t want to introduce germs into your baby, do you?…

#HLWDK Daily Health Tips: Red Eyes In A Four-Year Old

Q: Dr my daughter is 4 years old and her eyes always have this red colour that comes and goes – sometimes on its own, sometimes after washing it with warm water and she feels no pain in her eyes. What could be the cause?

A: Thanks for writing in. Although your question is about a 4-year old, I will be addressing red/pink eyes in any age group, generally.

A red eye can give you cause for serious concern especially if it happens when you can’t really attribute any event/trauma to it…and then it’s also not painful. What on earth could it be?! 😀

Usually, the white of the eye (sclera) is covered by a transparent membrane with a rich blood supply, called the conjunctiva. This membrane can be infected/ irritated or blood vessels under it can burst leading to painless red eyes.

Irritation of the conjunctiva (conjunctivitis) could be due to an infection, allergy, chlorine (remember those blood shot eyes after swimming? :D), dust etc

Conjunctivitis due to viruses tends to affect one eye first and then spread to the other eye…helped along by people rubbing their red eyes and then touching the other eye.

Conjunctivitis caused by bacteria can usually be recognized by the presence of sticky eye discharge which crusts around the edges of the eye.

Conjunctivitis caused by allergies usually affect both eyes and causes significant itching.

A burst blood vessel causes a condition known as sub-conjunctivial haemorrhage (this simply means bleeding under the conjunctiva). This can be caused by coughing or straining.

Treatment of conjunctivitis may involve the use of eye drops. Remember not to prescribe them for yourself…that’s what your doctor is there for 😀

Other measures include placing cool face towels or flannels to the eye to soothe it, not sharing towels, pillows/pillowcases, staying away from make-up at this time (I feel you, girl friend! Imagine going out without putting your face on! Whaaat!!!!), staying of contacts, if you use them and don’t forget to keep your hands off your face.

Burst blood vessels would usually resolve on their own.

Burst vessels usually require no treatment and resolve within 7 to 14 days.

Now, if you develop pain or find that your vision is affected, please see your doctor. It could be any number of issues including glaucoma, sty ( a small lump/boil at the edge of the eye lid), foreign body in the eye etc.

So, be sure to see your doctor so he can make a diagnosis of your condition and I’m sure you’ll be bright eyed in no time!

Sleep tight, y’all…and don’t let the bed bugs bite 😀
