#HLWDK Daily Health Tips: Bending Down In Pregnancy

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Q: Good afternoon ma’am. Please ma’am, I am 12 weeks pregnant and I mistakenly ate something prepared with potash. I am scare though I only ate a small quantity. I bend down to sweep, is it also dangerous?

A: Hi dear, congratulations on your pregnancy.
Well, if you’ve taken the potash already, nothing to be gained by worrying about it. Where in doubt, please see your doctor.

Bending is okay in pregnancy but it has to be done the proper way…bending at the knees and not twisting your body while at it I suggest that you use the long-handled brushes for sweeping as opposed to the local/native brooms that require bending…in probably uncomfortable ways.

Pregnant women get lots of advice: from friends, mothers, mothers-in-law, colleagues, husbands etc. Sometimes it’s confusing to know what’s true and what’s not.
Here’s our take on some of them:

Daily Health Tips: Why Is My Vision Cloudy?

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Q: Hi Dr Ketch. I’ve been having eye problems for four years. Last year, I began having cloudy eyes and an ER doctor gave me something to rub around my eyes with good result. This May, I went to an eye doctor who gave eye drops that were different from those I usually use as he thought I had an allergy to the other ones.
I have been having recurrent blurry eyes especially with my specs (eye glasses) off. Do you think it may be due to too much exposure to sun’s heat, light from TV and tech devices or anything I’m not aware of?

A: Cloudy vision is a situation in which objects appear milky and ‘veiled’. It is oftentimes used interchangeably with blurry eyes. Blurry, cloudy or even double vision can be seen in disease conditions like:
• Cataract: This is a cloudy area on the lens and…

#HLWDK Daily Health Tips: What Can Cause Breast Milk Production In The Absence of Pregnancy?

Q: Good afternoon doctor. Please what could be responsible for breast milk coming out of my wife’s breast for one week now while she is not yet pregnant?

A: Some women who are not pregnant may have milky fluid come out of their breasts when they are not breastfeeding or even in women who have never been pregnant. This is called galactorrhea. This is not a disease on its own but a symptom of a problem. The hormone, prolactin which is responsible for lactation in nursing mothers, is usually produced in these cases.

This milky fluid can be expressed by pressing or it can spontaneously come out on its own. It can affect one or both breasts and usually there are no blood stains involved.

Sometimes, the cause of this discharge may not be known but some causes could be some medications, some drugs like cocaine, spinal cord injuries, some birth control pills, stress and even excessive stimulation during sexual intercourse.

Galactorrhea can also happen in men and new born babies! In new born babies this can happen if the mother has a high level of estrogen which crosses over into the baby and stimulates the formation of breast tissue and sometimes, some milky white discharge. Please note: this is NOT witchcraft!

If you notice this, please visit your doctor who may try to express this discharge to study. The discharge may also be clear (as in your friend’s case), bloody or even tinged yellow. These need further evaluation and the presence of lumps should also be checked for. The level of prolactin will also be assessed. This may, however, be normal in people who are overly sensitive to prolactin. In this class of people, prolactin level is normal but there is still milky discharge from the nipples.

Treatment is focused on the underlying cause if one can be found. If the problem is medication, please stop or switch to something else under the supervision of your physician (doctor). If there is a tumour producing prolactin, drugs can be taken to shrink it or surgery can be done. If no cause is found, drugs that reduce prolactin level are prescribed. Remember, that your friend could be pregnant and so a pregnancy test may not be out of place.

In the meantime, breast pads can be worn to prevent the embarrassing leaks from staining clothes, limit manipulation of breasts either by self-breast examination or during sexual activity and try not to wear clothes in which there would be friction between the nipples and the material.

All the best!

#HLWDK Daily Health Tips: When Does Morning Sickness Start?

Q: Hello doc, after how long does morning sickness start in pregnant women? Because I’m a little nervous about my girlfriend ,,,,,, I don’t know if she wanna fix it on me.

A: Morning sickness can actually occur at any time of the day, although the name makes you think otherwise. For most women, the symptoms typically start at around 4 to 6 weeks of pregnancy. To prevent cases like this and worries about girlfriends ‘fixing stuff on their partners’, here are a few tips:

Remember the ABCs. Abstain (which is always the best bet if you’re not married), be faithful to one partner (who is hopefully being faithful to you) or use condoms.

Now, for the rest of you who want to know how to handle morning sickness in pregnancy, below are some tips for you:

The standard teaching is to try eating some bland foods like Crackers biscuits or dry toast. That personally didn’t work for me. I preferred tart things…which some may want to avoid. I loved lemons during my pregnancies. They were the one thing guaranteed to ‘wake up’ my mouth and chase nausea far away. I also had a particular brand of very tart bubble gum, I indulged in  These were key for me because, though I didn’t have the real bad case of morning sickness that sent you to the hospital, brushing my teeth in the morning always sent me into a bout of retching/vomiting. So, I always had a ready supply of the gum or lemon/lime to pop into my mouth once I was done brushing/retching! Not a very pleasant memory ;D

So, if lemons work for you to prevent nausea, go for it. Remember that moderation is key. A few drops (one or two) in a glass of water are enough to provide that tart kick that sends nausea far away. There is a catch here though…remember the heart burn associated with pregnancy. The acid content of lemon might make the heart burn and any pre-existing gastro-esophageal (stomach and esophagus/gullet) problems worse. So, this is all the more reason to be very moderate or stop if it exacerbates an already bad case of heart burn. Wherever and whenever in doubt, please be sure to see your doctor.

Other tips:
• Eat little amounts of food frequently as an empty tummy increases the likelihood of throwing up. Remember this is not an excuse to binge and over eat
• Avoid fatty and greasy foods.
• Avoid smells that trigger nausea
• Cold foods may be preferable to hot as the former does not give off smells that may cause you to feel queasy.
• Get loads of fresh air and rest
• And drink sufficient fluids daily

More importantly, your wife needs your love and support more than ever. If she can’t stand cooking now, because of this, be supportive. Help out or ensure she has help. Knowing you’re on her side will most certainly help her cope with this.

Have a good night everyone 😀

Daily Health Tips: Does Wearing Heels During Pregnancy Cause Miscarriage?

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Q: Good morning Doc. I am 6 weeks pregnant and its my first baby would like to know if its true that if i wear heels its risky and might lead to miscarriage. Is it true?

A: I love my heels! I am petite (that’s fancy grammar for vertically challenged or not very tall. I draw the line at using the ‘s’ word :D). I also walk like a soldier (no kidding) whenever I wear flats…no regard to finesse et al! I probably missed all those classes where catwalks were taught (sigh!). So how do I live without my heels; I’d be looking up to everybody!!! But more seriously, the question is ‘are heels good for your feet or not?’

Truth is high heels can create deformities by altering the normal shape of the foot, can cause problems with your Achilles tendon (the prominent tendon at the back of the…

Daily Health Tips: Constipation In A One-And-A-Half Year Old

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Q: Hi doctor, my young brother is one year six months. He has not been to toilet for a week now. He doesn’t show any sign of sickness. Is this normal?

A: Not having moved bowel for about a week is definitely constipation at this age. Causes of this include diet (if a child is not getting enough fruits and veggies or getting too much milk), if a child is not getting enough activity, if the child is worried about potty training and so prefers to hold it in rather than bring it out 😀 and dehydration (not getting enough water. Underlying medical problems may also be other causes of constipation.

To prevent constipation:

Ensure that your baby has sufficient fruits and veggies in his/her diet. From the point of weaning from exclusive breast feeding, be sure to start introducing fruits and veggies.
Stay within the recommended limits of milk…

#HLWDK Daily Health Tips: Miscarriage Again!

Q: Good morning Doc, March last year my wife had a miscarriage because she took hot pepper soup without her knowing she was pregnant. Now, she doesn’t want to get pregnant again. What should I do? Please help

A: condolences on the loss of your baby. It is never an easy experience for anyone to go through.

Unfortunately, often times, the cause of a miscarriage is not identified. You need to understand this so that neither you nor her blame yourself unduly. Having said that though, first trimester miscarriages are mainly due to problems with the baby/fetus. These problems could be due to problems with the placenta. This is how the baby receives its nutrients in the womb and so, if this organ cannot deliver, a miscarriage might occur. There may also be a problem with the baby’s chromosomes, such that a baby may receive too many or too few genetic materials or there may be a damaged egg/sperm. Other associated risk factors include smoking and drinking alcohol, being overweight, malnutrition, increased maternal age, trauma and drug abuse. By the way, trimester is 3 months of pregnancy. Therefore, first trimester refers to the 1st three months, 2nd trimester, the 2nd three months and 3rd trimester, the last three months

To try for a pregnancy again, remember to ensure there is unprotected sexual intercourse at least three times a week with ejaculation of sufficient amounts of semen. You should start on folic acid supplements as soon as you can, to prepare you and baby for the journey ahead.

To prevent a recurrence, focus on ensuring that you stay healthy and do not indulge in harmful habits like smoking and excessive alcohol drinking. Other helpful tips include eating healthy, keeping weight within normal parameters, avoiding trauma and not abusing drugs.

In addition, as soon as you get pregnant again, you should register for antenatal as soon as possible and keep to your appointments religiously.

All the best!

Daily Health Tips: Storage Of Breast Milk Re-Visited

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Dear family, thank you so much for your kind thoughts and wishes to me yesterday. You overwhelmed me with your love. I’m not sure how many of you got around to answering the question, ‘what are you thankful for?’ but I’m certainly thankful for the love I felt from all of you yesterday.

May your joy be full always!

And now to today’s question…

Q: How can I store expressed breast milk?

A: Expressed breast milk has to be handled in a very hygienic way. It is important that it does not form the means by which germs find their way into your baby’s body so utmost care must be taken.

What should you do? I reproduce a post I had made on this a while back;

To express milk for your baby, first, you have to be committed to be hygienic because you don’t want to introduce germs into…
