The Power of Starting Over!

In the last 8 years, work took me across different countries (Rwanda, Kenya, Liberia, Sierra Leone) and in all that moving, life (and weight happened!)

🙂

I fell off the wellness wagon but now that I’m more settled, I’m starting over. I have always talked about wellness being a journey and not a destination. If you fall off the wagon, forgive yourself and get back on! There is so much power in choosing to begin again – a brand new and clean slate to write on. Have you ever had to start over?! Let’s do this together!

Don’t Want to Leave Your Apartment? Here’s a Fitness Hack For You!

A while ago, I took 2 weeks off work. I was just exhausted. It had been back-to-back-to- back – you know one of those years! During that break, I barely left my apartment. In fact, in the first few days, I only stepped out twice. I slept and hid from the world… and honestly, it was exactly what my soul needed.

But apparently, my ‘disappearance’ caused concern 😀 One afternoon, my doorbell rang loudly and insistently. My doorbell is one of those jarring ones and so, it was quite a ‘rude’ awakening! 😀

I opened the door to find two security men doing a wellness check on me. It was incredibly sweet of them, but I was okay, just tired and living my best introverted life! Are you like that? More introverted than extroverted and really loving your own company? I think, I’m a mixture of both – Love to be out and about with people but also love my own company.

Later when I discussed with one of the security men, he wondered, ‘Madam, you didn’t feel like walking around at all?’. And I’m sure there’s a lot to be said for going outside…but people! I was just exhausted! I just wanted to peace, quiet, equanimity and sleep.

It was during that time that I unlocked the magic of walking in my apartment. I scheduled it and started with a daily goal of 6000 steps. It was very tough when I started. Just the thought of having to get up from my cozy bed to do that was exhausting, but I persevered. I started and kept at it. This was in September. By January, I had moved up to 10,000 and was religious. I would like to say I met the goal every single day…I didn’t. But I met it most days and what was more important was that I became consistent with this way of life.

I would also like to say that I noticed the kilograms peel off immediately 😀 They didn’t. but I noticed (more than I saw), a little more space with this top and a little more freedom with those trousers and step by step, the foundation was laid.

It is still a problem to stick with the routine when I am out of station, but I do whatever I can.

What is one exercise/fitness hack you can incorporate into your life today and stick with it? Not one of those resolution-type things but something that really fits into your lifestyle and you can stick with it even on the days you are ‘exhausted’?

#HLWDK Daily Health Tips: World Health Day 2024

Today is World Health Day 2024 with the theme, ‘My Health, My Right’

The global right to health continues to face challenges. COVID-19 showed how far we were from universal health coverage – a situation where all people have access to the good quality care that they need without suffering financial hardship. The poor were pushed further into poverty and had to struggle to cope with the health and economic fallouts of the pandemic.

Diseases, disasters, and conflicts continue to claim lives, while air pollution from fossil fuels (such as the fuel from that generator 😊) threatens clean air. Despite health being recognized as a human right in over 140 countries, many lack access to essential services.

This year’s theme, ‘My Health, My Right’, advocates for quality health services, education, clean water, nutrition, and freedom from discrimination for everyone, everywhere. We should continue to hold government at all levels accountable for ensuring universal health coverage.

In your own little corner, though, how are you contributing to creating a healthier, more equitable world?

#HLWDK Daily Health Tips: Crick In The Neck!

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Woke up a couple of days ago with neck pain and thought to post this so that y’all don’t have to go through what I went through. I knew exactly what caused it! 😀 Too many pillows…

What about you? Have you ever woken up with a crick in your neck that lasts for a while…perhaps due to the position in which you slept? That pain can be uncomfortable and may be due to other reasons. Here are ways to keep neck pain at bay:
• Try using the hands free device of your phone instead of constantly bending over your neck on one side to answer your call
• Make sure your computer screen is at eye level
• Keep your eye glasses’ lens prescription up to date so that you’re not constantly leaning back to see properly
• Don’t use too many pillows to sleep (obviously :D)
•…

Daily Health Tips: Does Cold Water Worsen Menstrual Cramps?

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Doc, please Ma’am, is it good to drink cold water during your periods, because I heard it’s not good from someobody? Whenever I take it and I’m on my I do have menstrual cramps. Can it be because of the water or something else? Ma’am, please share some tips to reduce cramps during period.

period,
A: The reason why you have cramps during your period is because your utrerus (womb) is contracting. If the contraction gets too strong that it blocks blood flow to vessels around, pain results. This is a usual body response when muscles are deprived of blood.

If you want to drink cold water during your period, be my guest! Does it make menstrual cramps worse? Not really. Perhaps the only thing that can be said for this is that the cold water has to be warmed by body temperature before it can be used. Having said…

Daily Health Tips: Should Women Eat Alligator Pepper?

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Q: Dr is there any side effect eating alligator pepper as a woman?

A: Good question. Alligator pepper is a spice used commonly in pepper soup, as an accompaniment to kolanut and garden eggs (egg plant) especially in Ibo land. It is touted as having quite a number of health benefits. However, a study carried out in 2009 by Inegbenebor et al, suggests that its excessive use in the first trimester of pregnancy may pose a health risk to women.

What’s a little, what’s a lot? 😉 I suggest that you leave well alone during the period of pregnancy.

Have a good weekend, y’all 😀

Daily Health Tips: Can I Menstruate When I’m Pregnant?

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Q: Good job Dr. Please, keep it up.
Dr. is it possible for one to be pregnant and still see her monthly period?

A: People do not menstruate when pregnant. Remember that menstruation happens when fertilization of eggs released during ovulation by sperm does not occur. And so, if fertilization and pregnancy occur, menstruation is ruled out.

Bleeding can occur in early pregnancy though, close to or about the same time as the menstruation would and thus be mistaken for a period. This bleeding could be due to implantation as the fertilized egg implants itself in the uterus (womb). Other causes of bleeding in early pregnancy include ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage and infections.

Bleeding in pregnancy may not necessarily be an emergency but because there are other causes of these episodes of bleeding, which are potentially life threatening like ectopic pregnancy, bleeding in pregnancy should always be checked out in the…

Daily Health Tips: When Does A Pregnant Woman Start Producing Milk?

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Q: Hey Dr … my wife wanted to know, ‘when does a pregnant woman breast start sending milk?’ She’s 3 months 1 week and 3 days pregnant?

A: Breast fullness with attendant pain/tenderness during pregnancy is to be expected and one of the signs of pregnancy. This is due to the hormones, Estrogen and progesterone, increase in blood flow and fat deposits in the breast…all in preparation for the job of breastfeeding the soon-to-be-born baby.

The breasts may start to produce milk as early as second trimester (from about 14 weeks) into the pregnancy. This may show up as leakage of fluid (breast milk) from the breast. This milk is colostrum, the first milk produced by a mother to feed her young. This milk is filled with antibodies which help protect and strengthen the baby’s immune system. This leakage can be prevented by using breast pads

Daily Health Tips: Keeping Healthy During A Fast

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Q: Hello Dr Ketch, what can I do to be healthy especially as we are preparing for our fast?

A: Thanks for writing in.

What to do? Keep eating healthy and focus on gentle exercises.
Breaking a fast is usually not as easy as it should be. You haven’t been eating and now it’s time to eat, so you pick anything you like to eat. Pretty open and shut, isn’t it? But actually, it’s not that easy.
Eating and drinking during a fast (religious or otherwise) should be easy…but is not always so. First, when a lot of people break fasts, they go on a binge. They eat the equivalent of what should have comfortably been taken over two or three meals! 😀 And then they break the fasts with the wrong meals: refined and processed foods (eg cakes, pies etc) which lead to blood sugar spikes. Complex carbohydrates are…

#HLWDK Daily Health Tips: Threatened Abortion

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Q: Dear: Doctor I’m 9 weeks
pregnant and going through threatened miscarriage I’m bleeding heavy with clots
I go to my doctor regularly but I always get the same answer that my baby is
still there I just need bed rest. This bleeding worries me a lot, is there
anything I can do to stop the bleeding?

A: A threatened miscarriage also known as threatened
abortion is vaginal bleeding that occurs within the first 20 weeks of
pregnancy. The bleeding is sometimes accompanied by abdominal cramps indicating
that a miscarriage is possible

Causes of threatened abortion include the placenta
trying to latch on to the wall of the uterus (womb), vaginal infections, damage
to the cervix, blood clot around the amniotic sac.

Your obstetrician will make this
diagnosis with an ultrasound scan. If a heartbeat is present irrespective of
your symptoms, then it is a threatened abortion. Absence of a…
