Q: Hi Dr, my place is a place with lots of mosquitoes, hence my wife always opt for fleet (insecticide) and vacates the room until its effect is entirely gone in our room. But now that we’ve got a baby and she still go ahead to have the room sprayed with the insecticide fleet, it gets me disturb and I’m afraid. So I want to ask if it’s actually Safe.

Thanks ma’am
A: Hello new Dad! Thanks for writing in and being concerned about your new baby. By the way, congratulations! 😀
No, your wife should not use insecticide in the room where your brand new baby will be sleeping, as there are harmful chemicals in theses insecticides. After 2 months, it’s considered safe to use insecticides containing the chemical DEET. But, since you may not know which has DEET and/or other harmful chemicals, I suggest you err on the side of caution. There are alternatives. The focus should be on preventing these mosquito bites since you know you live in an area with lots of them.
• Cover up your baby in the evenings when the mosquitoes usually go on rampage. Even if the weather is hot, please do so. However, you can opt for light cotton outfits, which are loose fitting so that baby does not get too hot.
• Make sure you use insecticide treated mosquito net for your baby. This will prevent those bites
• Use mosquito nets on your windows and doors. This adds an additional layer of protection to the mosquito net around baby’s bed/cot
However, the most important thing to do is to prevent the breeding of these mosquitoes, especially as you say you live in an area with a lot of them.
Be sure to fumigate your house to rid them of mosquitoes and other creepy crawlies, frequently. Ensure the vendor tells you what chemicals will be used, how long you need to be away and whether it’s compatible with artwork etc. Cover up foodstuff, take off beddings etc., and then do a major clean up afterwards
Did you know that the buckets of water used to store water in areas where pipe-borne water is not constant, can be a huge source of mosquitoes? Have you observed them rising from these buckets of water when you approach in the evening? If you have to store water, get covers for them and ensure they are closed all the time.
Did you know that if your bathroom drain is blocked, apart from the fact that it’s unhygienic, the water there also acts as a comfortable home for mosquitoes? So, ensure that your drains are free-flowing with no stagnant water. Keeping it smelling nice and fresh is also a good touch ;D
Did you know that your flower pots with lots of water also serve as a breeding place for mosquitoes? The water used on the flowers should be completely absorbed by the soil with none left on top. Watch out for lazy helps who want to do a month’s watering in a day 😀
Did you know that the unwashed drains and gutters outside, bushy lawns, potholes and broken concrete slabs serve as lovely homes for mosquitoes? Fill up potholes and be sure to clean up your environment often
I hope this helps.
Have a good night, y’all 😀
