Daily Health Tips: Hiding Places For Germs

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Have you ever wondered common places in your house where germs hide? People readily think of the toilet…but have you spared a thought for other areas or things in the house? Well that’s why we’re here! Let’s tell you some top hiding places for germs:

• Studies have shown that germs really love the kitchen sponge. Take a little moment and think about it and it may not be so strange! To disinfect it you could soak it in lemon juice or bleach, wash in the dishwasher or just hand wash it. Do this every evening after the night washing up is done.

• Your TV remote: This is a no-brainer right?! How many times do you reach for the remote control daily…while eating (with those very grimy hands), after having had a fumble in your nose, after rushing out from the toilet (before washing your hands) to catch the…

Re-Visiting Our Laundry

chatwithdrketch's avatarchatwithketch

Whenever the weekend comes along, people get up to speed with cooking and laundry. Have you ever wondered whether you’re doing your laundry right? Think your family is protected because you wash everyday…or every weekend? Let’s do a reality check.

Here are our top tips to prevent the spread of germs through laundry.

• Wash dirty clothes as soon as possible. The longer the germs are allowed to breed on the clothes, the more difficult it will be to get rid of all of them in one wash. This is even worse for damp clothes like towels for obvious reasons and underclothes too. Panties should be washed after wearing once (which is usually from morning to evening)…and this rule also applies to guys 😀

• Sort the laundry before washing. Apart from ensuring that the clothes are sorted according to colour and thus, do not run the risk of staining…

#HLWDK Daily Health Tips: Hearing Loss

Q: Doc I need help my sister in law’s ear. When you talk to her she her from far you have to talk aloud but she went to the clinic they gave her ear drop but its not helping and she is avoiding going to hospital and her ear does not have any fluid coming out. The problem its hearing and there is no pain in the ear. She said her ear is making sounds no pain; so can she become deaf?

A: Thanks for writing in.

Noisy ears as you have described is medically called tinnitus. This is a sensation of hearing noise or ringing in the ears. The noise in the ears has also been described as whistling, humming, grinding, hissing, buzzing etc. This is, most times, not a sign of a serious medical condition and would just be a minor irritation as it comes and goes. In other instances, it is continuous, significantly impacting everyday life. It is worse when background noise is low and worsens with age. Generally, it would get better over time or with treatment.
Other conditions associated with tinnitus include:
• Middle ear infection
• Ear wax build-up
• Inner ear damage
• Some medications like aspirin taken in very large doses and some antibiotics like Neomycin etc
• Medical conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes etc
• Perforated ear drums caused by violent events
Men, people who smoke, are exposed to loud noise on a prolonged basis, older people and those with cardiovascular problems are more likely to develop tinnitus.
There is really no treatment for tinnitus except there is a specific cause like ear wax build-up, high blood pressure, specific medication etc. In such situations, the cause is treated ( eg removal of ear wax changing medication etc) and symptoms may get better.
In other instances where there is no cause, focus is on helping one live with it through counselling, therapy to change the way one thinks about the noise so that they are better able to deal with it, introducing one to neutral sounds which help distract from the ear ‘noise’ etc. Some medications can also help reduce the severity of symptoms.
So, the first thing to do is to get your sister-in-law down to see an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist. He/she will make a diagnosis and then advice on the next course of management.
Have a great evening, people

#HLWDK Daily Health Tips: World No Tobacco Day

Today is World No Tobacco Day. The theme for this year is Tobacco- a threat to development. “Tobacco threatens us all,” says former WHO Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan. “Tobacco exacerbates poverty, reduces economic productivity, contributes to poor household food choices, and pollutes indoor air.” Spending on tobacco is up to 10% of total household expenditure in very poor households. This means less money available for food, healthcare and education.

So, every effort has to be made to make smoking look ‘less cool’ especially to impressionable youngsters. The packs of cigarettes should be made plain with a ban on marketing and advertising of these products. The latter has been done in Nigeria but the marketers of the products have also become very innovative, taking the products to the very place where they are used…the bars, clubs and other ‘cool’ hangouts. Something has to be done about that! Another possible deterrent of smoking is the imposition of a ‘sin’ tax on the product making it that much more expensive to procure. Whatever we do, we have to ensure that we protect the environment and the people who live in it (you and I) from the dangers of smoking.

Below, I reproduce a post I had written on smoking in adolescents to celebrate this same day, a while back. Enjoy…

When I was younger, the picture of a cool guy wasn’t complete without a cigarette in his hands. Then, if he had a cigar, men, that was hyper ultra cool! He would usually be seen leaning on a cool car, with lots of other dudes hanging on to his words and pretty girls dying to be given the eye by him. In fact, some television adverts for cigarettes would go so far as to show how with puffs of cigarettes, a regular guy not only becomes super-cool but also becomes a super athlete, star etc. Do they actually possess these powers? Hmmm!

It was World No Tobacco day a few weeks back. It really went by quietly with not much noise; I think I just caught a tiny paragraph in the newspaper where a company exec from one of the tobacco companies talked about how much they were doing in terms of corporate social responsibility. The focus for this year’s celebration was banning tobacco advertising: ‘Ban tobacco advertising, sponsorship and promotion’. The tobacco companies, to be fair to them, actually note on the packs that smokers are likely to die young. But I’ve always thought the adverts were not really telling us anything. Die from what exactly? People who cross the roads without looking are likely to die young; people who do not use the pedestrian crossings and instead choose to cross the expressway are likely to die young, any person who falls in front of a fast moving train will most certainly die, young or old 😀 etc. In fact, my friends delight in telling me whenever I sound sanctimonious that ‘ na something go kill person’. These are the adult, almost ‘ossified’ fossils like me :D.

For the younger ones, repercussions that are too far in the future are difficult to comprehend today when they are all hip and cool. The talk of all the consequences is kinda like lots of smoke without fire! And the tobacco companies have also gotten innovative, they take the advert to where the young ones actually hang out. The time of discovering tobacco is about the same time that alcohol is discovered and so the young ‘uns are hanging around bars and night clubs ( I thought there were age limits for admission? :O). This is where the tobacco companies go and they have a huge and captive audience.

Tobacco use has a lot of health implications and has been noted as a risk factor in lung diseases, heart diseases and cancers. This may appear to be too far in the future and difficult for our teenagers who are in their prime to contemplate. So, perhaps educating them about more short to medium term consequences may be helpful. Some of these include:

  • Reduced fitness levels…making them appear old and fuddy-duddy! They can’t even join the cool sports teams.
  • Nasty smelling breath that even tooth paste, breath mints and candy cannot mask.
  • Becoming unattractive to non-smoking peers
  • Stained teeth and fingers
  • Wasting money that could be used for clothes, music or other items
  • Finally, the fact that the teenager loses control and can’t stop smoking once addiction to nicotine appears.

I had a very close relation who smoked…a lot. He also drank…a lot. He eventually died with complications of hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus, liver cirrhosis and lung disease. Granted, there was a whole lot more going on than just the smoking but it’s now a case of which came first, ‘the cart or the horse’. I don’t know but I can surely tell you that smoking didn’t help him any. Tobacco use is a major preventable cause of death world wide. The reasons for tobacco use are many and diverse, but in a nutshell, appears to be a way from which people attempt to escape stress and the pressures of life. So the campaign for eradicating smoking goes beyond the individual and involves the Government which must provide the right socio-economic support for the issues people stress out about. Having said that, we also have a role to play.

For the adult smokers, there has to be a clear desire to quit and so being positive, being around supportive people and avoiding the areas where one usually is encouraged to smoke, are steps in the right direction. Getting other hobbies, switching to oral substitutes like chewing gum, carrots and mints are also helpful. Brushing your teeth often is also a good idea as toothpaste makes cigarette taste really bad…so I hear 😉

Methinks though that the best way to discourage your teenagers from smoking is by setting a good example. They learn much more from what we do than from what we say.

So guys, I say, ‘let’s tar our roads, not our lungs!’

Good night y’all 😀

#HLWDK Daily Health Tips: Swimmer’s Ear

Q: I have a swimmers ear infection almost a month of suffering for the pain and their are fluids goes out at my left ear it color yellow and its sticky I don’t know what to do and I cant hear clearly cause by ear infection

A: Hello! Thanks for writing in.

I had written a post on swimmer’s ear as part of a post I wrote on the ears. I reproduce same below. Very interesting! 😀

How come you feel sad or cry when a sad song is played? Think about it…that’s right. It’s because you heard the lyrics and perhaps it tugged at a memory. What about the pain you feel when that person you care about hurls some really nasty words at you? It’s almost like your heart is going to break, right?
All these emotions can be experienced through one gateway only…the ears!

Have you ever wondered whether you’re taking good care of your ears? Weird question, right? Like, what can go wrong with your ears? They generally mind their business on the sides of our heads and more often than not, we don’t even notice them. That’s kind of why when you take the pains to look behind them, especially for children, you find ‘amazing’ stuff behind them…disgustingly smelly stuff, that much I can tell you!

Well, I never used to pay much mind to these hearing organs until I had children. First, my first daughter gingerly walked into my room one weekend and complained about a funny sensation in her ears. I probed about whether this was water in the ear, an itch, a buzzing sound…what? I decided to look in. What did I see…a pencil tip!!! No! How on earth does something on a writing instrument end up in an ear? How did this happen? How…? The questions were popping out faster than I could ask them? The story came out…pretty basic and simple story, really. She felt an itch in her ear, she had a pencil in her hand and generally scratched the itch with it. Pretty simple really…you feel an itch, you scratch it. Yes? Well yes, just not with a pencil or sharp object…especially when it’s your ear or even eye. So, we ended up in the ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) doctor’s office where the ‘foreign object’ was removed. Thankfully no lasting damage had been done to ear drum or any other part of the ear.

Next episode came via my second daughter who anytime she swam kept us awake the whole night screaming about her ears! I almost considered banning swimming as her case of swimmer’s ears was always more than I could bear. What is swimmer’s ears, I hear you ask? This usually occurs when the outer ear becomes moist and warm from frequent swimming. The natural oily, waxy protection of the ear canal is also washed away. Thus, bacteria have the ideal environment (warm and moist) to thrive in and can do so without any fear of being trapped by the wax that has been washed away. This condition would usually start off with tingling or itching in the ear…you know the type, you can’t resist scratching 😀 But try…to resist it, as this just worsens a bad situation by breaking the delicate skin of your ear, letting in even more bacteria! Other times, this condition would show up as pain in the ear with some discharge too.

The final ear episode I can remember, also started with ear pain/itch. We ended up in the ENT doctor’s office again this time for removal of impacted wax.

Now, what’s the moral in these stories? There’s something to be said for caring for our ears. For instance, our common practice of cleaning our ears with cotton tips or cotton buds should be discouraged. These actually push wax deeper into the ears. They can also harm the delicate lining of your ear and in extreme cases, bore a hole in your ear drum! In fact conventional wisdom states that we should not clean our ears with anything bigger than our elbows….uhuh! You heard me…your elbows! So, just wash your outer ears with a wash cloth while taking a bath…this is more than sufficient cleaning!

Other tips to take care of your ears:
When swimming:
• Choose clean pools or waters to swim in.
• Use a swimming cap and use it to shield your ears.
• It’s probably inevitable that some water will get into your ears, but don’t just let it sit there. Shake it out.

The wax actually serves a purpose…to trap foreign objects that may want to go deeper down into your ears and cause damage. So, leave it well alone to get on with this job.

Constantly using earphones may also lead to problems in your ear…recall how it appears your ear is kind of inflamed after a while?

Remember that pencils, pens or their covers are not meant to be used to scratch your ear or remove wax.

If you do find a foreign body in your ear, don’t try to get anyone to fish it out, see your doctor!

Treatment for swimmer’s ear includes cleaning (to ensure that the ear drops to be prescribed can flow to the affected areas) using a suction or curette, use of ear drops (with a combination of any of an antifungal medication, an antibiotic, steroids for the inflammation and/or acidic solution to restore the normal environment of the ear) and use of pain medication. It’s usually better to get someone to apply the ear drops, while you are lying on one side with the affected ear up. try warming the ear drop by holding the bottle in your hands for a while before use.

Be sure to avoid swimming for the duration of the treatment or any activity that gets water into the ear. This, unfortunately does not include, avoidance of taking a bath 😀 Just be sure to protect your ears with a cotton ball nicely lubricated with petroleum jelly.

I hope y’all had a great day? Have an even better evening 😀

#HLWDK Daily Health Tips: Too Soon?

Q: Good day Doctor. It’s not up to 3 months I gave birth through CS but I have already started seeing my menstruation. Is it normal Doctor? Thanks

A: Hello and Congratulations on your new baby! Return of menses following delivery is varied between individuals. Some women would see theirs a few weeks after, some others after a few months or even a year, while in others there is no return of menses before another pregnancy begins.
Different women report different changes with their menstrual periods after childbirth. Some report longer periods. Others report shorter periods; some others report less pain and others observe absolutely no change at all 😀
So, don’t stress. If you are still worried though, it never hurts to have a chat with your doctor.

Have a great Democracy Day, Nigerians

#HLWDK Daily Health Tips: Menstrual Hygiene Day 2017

Today is Menstrual Hygiene Day.

When I was younger, I hated going shopping with my mum to buy sanitary towels or pads. She would ask me to pick them out and I would absolutely feel the whole world was looking at me! The embarrassment is better imagined than felt! I would get them and bury them under whatever else we had bought! My mum could not understand what all the ‘drama’ was about. She would jokingly ask me whether I felt the people in the shops would actually be surprised to know that a big girl like me was ‘seeing’ her period. I didn’t care. It didn’t stop the embarrassment J

Fast forward to many years later….now I walk into shops and don’t even bother to get a basket to put pads in. I just pick them up and pay for them at the counter. My daughter, while not exactly embarrassed, makes a point of getting a basket, even if that’s the only thing we’re getting J But, that’s the whole point of today…there should be no embarrassment in having a period. It’s a right of passage and not an embarrassment. Mothers, fathers, brothers and indeed, the entire community should work hand in hand to ensure that everyone sees this as a normal phenomenon. If a girl gets stained and a guy sees this in school, it shouldn’t be a subject of laughter or fun. He should be bold and caring enough to walk up to the girl and perhaps offer his cardigan to her until she can deal with the stain.

Question is, are we bringing up our young men to be this caring? Are we teaching our young women to stay clean and hygienic during the monthly flow” Here’s a reminder class on menstrual hygiene:

Have you ever had that moment when you happen to catch a whiff of yourself during your period and almost throw up? You’re not alone. It is interesting though that the blood in menstrual flow actually doesn’t smell bad. It is the bacteria in the menstrual flow that actually raise the stench. So how do you deal with this? Here are five top tips to maintain personal hygiene and smell fresh during your period.

  • Take a bath regularly. Twice a day would be great or failing that at least once a day. If your flow is heavier than normal, you just may have to increase the frequency. Remember that to wash your delicate inner self where you’re bleeding from, you usually do not require more than water and your hands.
  • Change your sanitary towels often. As soon as you notice they are significantly stained, please change them. This should be every 4-6 hours at the very maximum. Aim for the lower limit 🙂
  • Deodorize. Carry a spare pack of deodorant and use that liberally whenever you have a pad change. Be sure not to attempt to smell like you soaked yourself in a bottle of perfume. It might also be a pointer that perhaps you’ve got something to hide.
  • Scrub your hands thoroughly after a pad change. Observe all the rules of proper hand washing. This ensures that you get rid of all the bacteria and may have got on your hands and ensures that you keep the odour level down.
  • Dispose of your sanitary towels properly. Do not flush them down the drain and if there is no trash can in the bathroom you are using to dispose of it, have a disposable ziplock bag to put it in and dispose it appropriately as soon as you can. Make sure that this is kept in a zipped up compartment of your bag.

Be confident and enjoy having your period. Remember that you can smell your genitals oftentimes because they are well, practically south of your nose…it doesn’t necessarily mean other people can smell them provided you’re obeying the rules of simple hygiene. And be sure to use an air freshener in the bathroom where you just changed. We don’t want to leave any tell-tale signs or smells now, do we?

The video below deals with some of the questions that young women ask about menstruation. Enjoy!

Have a great week ahead 🙂
