“I still want sex. Why can’t I get wet?”
Vaginal dryness does not automatically mean you have lost interest in sex or no longer desire your partner.
It can happen at any age.
Natural lubrication may decrease around menopause as oestrogen levels fall. Dryness can also occur while breastfeeding, after childbirth or because of certain medicines. Douching and perfumed intimate products may cause irritation and make the discomfort worse.
Sometimes the body simply needs more time to become aroused. Slow down and communicate with your partner. If penetration hurts, please stop. Do not force yourself through the pain.
A lubricant can reduce friction during sex. Water-based and silicone-based lubricants are common options.
A vaginal moisturiser is different. It is used regularly to improve ongoing dryness, not only when you are about to have sex.
Please use products made specifically for vaginal use. Ordinary body lotion, perfumed products and douches do not belong inside the vagina.
If the dryness continues, speak with a clinician. Vaginal oestrogen may help when menopause-related hormonal changes are responsible, but your doctor should confirm whether it is suitable for you.
Please get checked if you also experience bleeding after sex, unusual discharge, persistent pain, itching or recurrent urinary symptoms.
You can still want intimacy and need help with lubrication. One does not cancel the other.
