Can One Get Pregnant While Breastfeeding?

Q: Can a breastfeeding mother get pregnant?

A: Yes. she can.

But, there is a reason many people believe otherwise. Breastfeeding increases hormones that can suppress ovulation, and this effect was once used as a form of birth control called the Lactational Amenorrhea Method (LAM).

However, in real life we have seen again and again that women can and do become pregnant while breastfeeding.

Ovulation can occur before the first menstrual period returns, which means pregnancy can happen even when a woman believes she is still protected.

So while breastfeeding may reduce the chances of pregnancy for some time after delivery, it is not a reliable method of contraception.

If you want to avoid pregnancy after childbirth, it is best to discuss safe postpartum family planning options with your doctor.
