Daily Health Tips: Why Does My 3-Year Old Son Repeat Questions He’s Asked?

Q: Good day Dr Ketch! Please, I have a 3 year old son (adopted). I’m concerned about his development. When he is asked a question, he repeats that same question instead of answering it. He does this also in school as the teacher complains…..I’m so worried about this. Please, does it have any effect health wise? Maybe there’s something he lacks. I just don’t know CIA. I am so worried about it. What could be the problem, please?

A: Thanks for writing in and congratulations on your successful adoption. I trust that you feel VERY bonded to your baby…I’m a bit worried that you chose to mention that he’s adopted. He may not be of your blood, but he’s every bit yours now and I trust that you have more than enough love to lavish on him 🙂

Why would your son repeat questions? Well, usually, between the ages of 12 and 24 months, this response (responding to questions with questions) is expected as the child develops verbal skills required for life. However, by the age of 3 years, your son should be able to respond to questions properly. Now, this may be nothing or it may be a developmental disorder. In the meantime, please take your baby in to see his paediatrician. He/she will be able to refer him to the appropriate therapist, if need be.

I wish you the very best.

Have a good night, y’all 🙂
