Q: Good evening, Dr Ketch, my question is…Does Inguinal hernia in men have any effect on his fertility?

A: Inguinal hernias usually do not affect a man’s fertility. However, there is a possibility that during the hernia repair surgery, the vas deferens (the tube that transports semen from the testicles to the urethra-the tube that takes the semen outside of the penis) may be cut. The blood vessels to the testicles may also be damaged leading to reduced blood supply and subsequent shrinking of the testicles. Potentially, these can affect a man’s fertility.
